One of the best times I ever had at a century pay ride involved a tandem. They helped up our speed on flats and we helped push them up the climbs.

I was out on a ride last year here in Bavaria and spotted a (rather slow) tandem on the bike path ahead.
When I caught up, I saw that the rear cyclist was blind and out on a joyride with his buddy. Made my day, for sure!
