Spinacchi bars. Banned by the UCI for use in races – but they offer a more aero position

  2. Cinelli Spinaci, vintage aero bars. They attach to your bikes handlebars and act like an extra handhold.

You clamp them onto your handle bars near the stem clamp, they give you an extra aero/tucked position.

Spinaci bars, from the mid-late 90s. They were very popular and had a few variants (3T’s Tiramisu for one). They were outlawed by UCI cause they caused crashes during the first week of the Tour, which at the time was filled w sprint stages.
In reality the crashes were not more or less than today’s racing, but UCI being UCI decided to blame the crashes on dudes resting in the Spinaci bars rather than their drop bars. Although there’s a micro kernel of truth there, they were scapegoated and vetoed.
I had them at the time. They were super light but not super comfortable.

  5. What they are is unnecessarily dangerous. Get aero bars if you want to ride in the position they can afford.
