Starmer shows support in Scunthorpe

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met British Steel workers in the Appleby Village Hall near Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire.

MPs have approved plans to save British Steel’s Scunthorpe blast furnaces after an extraordinary sitting of the Commons on Saturday.

The emergency legislation giving the Government the power to instruct British Steel to keep the plant open passed the Commons unopposed.

Very good. Thank you. Nice to see you. Nice to meet you. I just um firstly just thanks very much for giving up a bit of time this morning to talk to me. I want to talk to you about what’s happening at Scorp future of steel and you’ll be really pleased that this emergency legislation is going through parliament. Now, we’ve been really clear that this is legislation in the national interest because I judged uh yesterday that it was right that we acted immediately um to take control uh to make sure that the blast furnace were not turned off. I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to uh step up. Um a challenging situation, but that’s what makes the difference. In the past, governments have walked by and we’ve walked towards the challenge. We’re going to pass this legislation. It’s gone through the comments already. you may have seen without a vote. Um so there’s no disscent to what we’re doing and I think that just emphasizes how it how important it is that we’ve taken the action that we um have. So thank you for um being here with me this morning team that you’ve got there with you know with your good self they’ve done a fantastic we’re not there yet. We’ve got still got a lot of hard work to do. What you see here is the unions together as well. So your team in London and our team in Scrum have worked really well together. So the three unions here are united with one and we come together to thank you for for for what you what you No. And I really appreciate that and um everything that you’ve put um into this and and the team Jonathan Weather Society Rachel Reeves have done a great job.
