Hi everyone!

I just picked up a second-hand Cervelo R3 (2019 I believe). The max tire clearance is listed as 28mm, but just wondering what anyone thinks I can get away with.

For reference, I included pictures with the current 25mm Conti GP tires on, which can fit a 6mm Allen key in the gap. I also test fit my 32mm Conti GP 5000, which I believe is too tight, I could fit a 3mm Allen key in the gap. I am debating between putting either 28mm or 30mm GP 5000 on it.

Any insight is appreciated!

  1. From the angle that the picture was taken, I would not run the 32mm. The vertical distance between tyre and fork crown looks fine, but the side to side clearance does not (this might just be the angle of the photo and not too bad irl). If your wheel ever goes slightly out of true, that will cause issues. Could you provide a more head-on shot?

I think 30mm will be ok, but you will need to try it and see. Your rim width will also play a role in how wide the tyre sits.

I believe the usual recommendation is a 4mm gap between tyre and fork crown, not sure about the side to side recommendation.

  2. I have run bikes with a tire gap that small, but it took the paint off from sand, dirt and small rocks shooting through the small gap. Not a Huge problem on steel bikes, but definitely a problem on carbon and to a lesser extent, aluminum. 30mm is probably a safer bet. A Rene Herse 30mm ultralight tire tubeless or with ultralight tpu tubes would afford you a surprising amount of comfort.
