There is not a better time than now to buy a new bike. They’re cheap, many models on sale, you get new parts with a warranty. Buy a new bike if you have the budget for it.

Honestly, I think that price is still a bit high on the Trek. If it were an EX8 at that price, I would say go for it. They’re great bikes, but that’s not a killer deal. The specs of the Specialized aren’t amazing for the price either. Also a great bike, but you’re still getting an X-Fusion rear shock and RS Silver fork. Shop around more and you may be able to line up a better speced bike in the same price range. But… you should always buy the bike you like best that fits you and your riding style. If I’m not mistaken, that Trek has a much lower stack. I parking lot test rode one and it felt like being on a bmx bike. Easy to hop, but not a downhill smasher.
By contrast, check out what Mike’s bike had the Giant TRANCE X ADVANCED PRO 29 3 listed for right now. Also look at Salsa’s Blackthorn and Cannondale’s Habit, both of which have had good sales at different shops lately.
