I picked up a like new Wilier escape. The bike has been sat for a long time but the frame is like the day it rolled out of the factory with apart from one issue.
The frame was sticky to the touch. It felt almost like the grease that builds up on top of kitchen cabinets. I tried using a degreaser to remove whatever the stickiness was. I suspect the build up could be a wax of some sort but I’ve never heard of a frame being waxed before.
As you can see from the pics the degreaser has definitely had an effect and the paint below looks great but removing whatever the build up is has proven to be laborious.
Does anyone know what the build up/application is and how to remove it efficiently?

  1. If it is indeed wax you can go at it with a hair dryer – seems to be the most forgiving method. Plastic scrapers should get most residue off if it’s caked on without damaging the paint

  2. It does look like wax, maybe they half assed tried to wax the chain. Wax is soluble in petroleum distillates so mineral spirits, goo gone, paint thinner, something like that.. Could always try some heat from a hair drier to soften it up as well.

  3. You are removing the matte clear coat. There would have been no saving it so don’t feel bad about doing what you did. Hopefully someone can suggest a good chemical for removal because I don’t know of any.
