Finally a new video with Mrs Real Ales! In this one we visit Colchester on a lovely summers day to check out it’s best boozers! We got to enjoy some bitters, porters, Belgian beers and even an American Brown Ale! Once again the South comes in clutch with a fantastic pub crawl because this was one of my favourites for a while! Cheers to Jay, Matt and Trev (whose music you’re hearing in this video) for showing us a few spots!

Let me know which boozer was your favourite and where I should visit next.

Pubs Visited:
Magnet – GBG
Victoria Inn – GBG
Three Wise Monkeys
Castle
Queen Street Brewhouse
Ale House – GBG
Fat Cat – GBG

As always I do my best to include a mix of GBG and non-GBG venues because whilst I feel the GBG is a great resource it does miss out a few gems!

Hey up and uh welcome to Colchester. Um yeah, bit of an odd place to do an intro, but you’ll find out a bit more about that soon. Um I’m here with uh Grace today or Mrs. Real ALS as she sometimes gets called in the comments. Let’s get off the road. There’s a car coming. Um yeah, so we’re here today in Colchester to pop out on a gorgeous summer’s day and uh visit a few pubs here in the area. Uh very excited for this one because uh I’m uh with Grace for the first time in ages. What it feels like. Anyway, what did we last do together? Was it Benorm? Yeah. Yeah. So, we haven’t been together since Benorm on a video. So, yeah, it’ be a good one. Um Colchester. Yeah, we are here today for the weekend because tomorrow I’m showing some uh American guys around a few pubs in London. Uh so we thought we’d come down a day early uh and get a video done down south because it’s been ages since we’ve done one. Uh so yeah, we chose Colchester and we’ve already been to one pub today and we were very pleasantly um not surprised but it was just very good pub to start the day. So that’s why we’ve come out here and we’re doing an intro in a very odd location uh because we couldn’t really find anywhere. But yeah, Colchester a bit too much history really to go into on a video. I recommend having a look through uh like the Wikipedia page or whatever about this town, but to give you a brief sort of cliff notes about the area. Um it was been a significant archaeological site for prehistory. There’s been all sorts of fine. It’s not that way, is it? Yeah, we’re going down there like that was the way. That’s definitely not the way. So yeah, it’s it’s been a very significant site in prehistory. I think there’s been finds from the Bronze Age, Neolithic, Iron Age, all sorts around here. And then it was a significant area in the Celtic period before the Roman invasion, which I think gives partly gives the reason why some people refer to it as Britain’s first city. But then it really sort of kicked off with the Roman invasion of Britain when the first Roman fort was set up here in the area. And uh Oh yeah, I think we’re going the wrong way, but I don’t know. I didn’t check the map properly for this one. All my fault. Um yeah, the um Romans set up the first their first fort here uh on this site. Uh, and it did have a Roman name. I ain’t going to say it. I don’t know how you pronounce it. Um, and then, uh, it became, like I say, basically Britain’s oldest city supposedly. I’m sure there’ll be some people who contest that, but uh, yeah, it seems to be pretty pretty good uh, uh, description based on its history. And, uh, then it’s also got a pretty well-known uh, castle, Colchester Castle. I think it’s actually a Norman fort that was built onto Roman foundations and has served all sorts of purposes over the years from housing kings and queens to a prison. And you can go and visit it now. It’s still there. So be worth having a look. Oh yeah, next pub’s l we must have been staring at it when we decided to go the opposite direction. Um and yeah, so we’re here today to check out the real ale pubs as you know by now. Uh we’ve just been to one and now we found the second one, but I’ll uh roll you back to earlier and you can have a look at that first one. So yeah, uh let’s have a wonder. Right, we’re coming up to the first pub here in Colchester now. It’s called Magnet and it’s a micro pub. You know, I’ve got to check out a micro pub when I see one. But I’ve not done an intro to this video yet because the whole journey we’ve walked from the train station has been on really loud, busy main road. So, I don’t think it would have done it much justice. But yeah, so we’re going to check out this first pub now and hopefully I’ll do the intro for you after. Yeah, let’s have a look. Think we can cross. Hello. Right. Nice run. Yeah. Much better than it was last week. How am I going? Might have to kick it off with a porter, please. Just These two are fresh on. Oh, fantastic. Even better. Have you got any gluten-free beers? Yes. Glutenfree at the moment. I thought the Oh. Oh, milk is gluten free. Oh, I had that one. Yeah, that was easy. Yeah. [Music] Fantastic. Thank you. You ready? He goes, “We don’t go down.” We go out. Right here we are in the sunny beer garden of Magnet I think it’s called this micro pub magnets or magnet. Uh yeah first impressions it’s very nice. Bit more of a modern style micro pub but great inside. Really friendly barman and a good beer selection to kick off the day. Definitely for me. And what about you? You got a bit free you? Yeah got a new one for me. I’m very happy. What did you think about the nice interesting barn snack selection which is always Yeah, it’s like a pleasant surprise from the the outside. It didn’t look like we’re going to be up too much. But then inside, yeah, cracking. So glad we kicked it off here today. And uh yeah, I’ve gone for Pace Goss Porter, I think it was called, by Bruha, something like that. And it’s brewed in East Anglia, 5.2%. I didn’t get how much it was because we got a load of snacks, but I’ll uh I’ll check before I go. Um, and yeah, I’m going to give it a go now. But thank you very much to Benjamin Tassel and Alex, I think Kowalsski Kowalsski. It’s a Polish surname with loads of uh letters, so I’m not 100% sure how to pronounce it, but you know who you are. Thank you very much for getting us some rounds in and covering some of the beers today. Appreciate that, lads. And uh yeah, let’s give this porter a go. So good. Oh yeah. Really like smoky chocolatey flavor in that porter. Absolutely fantastic uh beer to kick off with. My only maybe criticism of that is for a 5.2, it’s a little lacking on on the body side of things, but yeah, still a a bit like, you know, like a bit watery, but still a fantastic flavorful beer to start the day. What about you? What do you think to your Wild Craft? Is it Wild Craft Brewing? Um, Wild North Dry Hopped IPA and it’s 4.2%. I’ll give it a try. Oh, yeah. It’s really, really fruity actually. Um, slightly bitter at the end and quite dry, but yeah, delicious and gluten-free. So, good start. Good start. New brewery for me. Very good. So, happy days. Cheers. It’s like 2 hours to go in the falls, but we go there. [Music] When I saw you again, I knew I wanted you. Right. Yeah, that was the magnet. We uh finally worked out it was called. Um yeah, fantastic start to the day in all honesty. Just uh more modern style micro pub, but I just couldn’t fault it. Uh great spot, great friendly um bar staff. Got chatting in there as well to Emily who uh ran a pub. I think the Mulbury I think she said names already slipped my mind as well which is in a a town over or something like that. Um but yeah she they gave some recommendations. So we were going to go to the Marquis next I think it’s called but they said oh um go to the Victoria instead which is just over the road. So, we’re going to check that out now on their recommendation uh and see what that’s like for reals. You said they should have five wickets on. So, that’ll be good. Right, you’re back with me after that brief interlude of the the magnet. Hope you enjoyed that one cuz we thought it was a great pub to kick off with. We’re going to check out the Victoria in. Yeah. Sorry all that was a bit rushed then, but let’s go get another beer. I’m gasping. It’s really hot today. You all right? What we going for? Oh yeah. Yeah, I nearly went then. Um Oh god. Yeah, we’ve had a take over with cross from Yeah, that’ll be nice. I’m going to have to do two hours. I think I’ll do as well. There’s an extra special. Yeah, I know. I’ll do half of the American Brown and half of the Laga, please. Give that a go. Have you got any gluten-free beers at all? Yeah. So, the runner nitro nitro porter done by little brew up in disc. It doesn’t say it on it, but it is gluten-free. So, it’s like their version like nitro style. Very nice. I like half of that. Half of that for you. I mean, it’s like a an indoor pub outside in the beer garden, this place. It’s crazy. We’ll have a sit down. Should we at the bar? Should we sit at the bar? Yeah, let’s sit at the bar. We’re in the beer garden of the Victoria, which is like they’ve got a covered area that’s like a mini pub out in the pub. Like a fake pub. It’s really cool. Um, and I’ve couldn’t res couldn’t choose. It’s not often you see me get two hours. Um, I just couldn’t pick a beer. I’ve got a Kulch style lagger called Undy, I think, and a American brown ale called Devil in the Fireplace. Both from Bridge Cross Brewing. Apparently, they’ve had a um tap takeover here from with this brewery, which apparently from Rochdale. I’ve been drinking in Rodale a couple of times and I’ve never seen him before. So that’s interesting that it’s a new brewery and I’ve come all the way down here to have a northern brewery. Uh but yeah, I’m really looking forward to trying these. What have you ampando nitro stout I think or porter? I think it was a porter. Yeah, ampand nitro porter which glutenfree keg porter. That’s not bad going is it? So interesting. Do you want to give yours a go first? Yeah. Cheers. Oh yeah, that’s really nice. It’s really really creamy. Like velvety. Oh yeah, that’s quite it’s not too rich actually. It’s quite light for a Yeah, they sometimes are from the nitro cuz they’re a bit colder. Dampens the flavor. That’s really nice. And you do get the roasted pork through but sort of gentle at the end. Very nice. And gluten-free. So y Yeah, not bad. Two for two so far. Um, right. I’m going to go for the American brown first. It’s probably more sensible to try the laga, but let’s give this one a go. Very, very malty. That’s the overarching character of that bit. It’s very sort of light on body and incredibly malt heavy. a bit sort of like um I want to say dark chocolate, but it’s more like, you know, when you have just straight cocoa. There’s none of that sweetness whatsoever. It is just like chocolatey malty goodness. I could easily just suck pints of that. It’s really tasty. Um so yeah, and then a cask laga, which I don’t think I’ve had a cask laga since the Coventry video where I got the the um the dark laga. I can’t remember. Marsen or something like that. Um but yeah, let’s give this Kulch one a go. Do you want the light on for a bit more? Uh yes, please. Cheers. Just going to put the light on for us. Might get a bit brighter in here. Um yeah, that laga is incredibly light. Um a bit of it is more malty than hoppy. Um sweet as well actually for a laga, but in a good way. It’s u very um easy drinking, I’d say. It’s not got that much of that laga yeast hit from uh from the yeast that you’d expect, but still a very very nice beer. In fact, I’m going to have another go. See, get a bit more out of that. My arm’s really hurting now from filming this. Yeah, it is. It’s like sweet, very light. Um, again, you could easily drink loads of that and not notice you’ve had loads of beer. Very, very tasty. Yeah. Cheers. I’m going to put this camera down now before my arm falls off. Cheers. [Music] Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Have a good night. See you later. Cheers. All right. Yeah, that was the Victoria, a pub that just so happened to have a tap takeover on from a Rodale brewery. And great beers as well. I’ve been to drinking in Rodale, I think twice now, and I’ve never ever seen that brewery before. So, it was great for me to try some of them beers. And that pub again, fantastic pub. What did you think of it? Yeah, it was lovely. Yeah, quirky outside area. Yeah, an interesting outside area to say the least. Um, it just the Yeah, the barman were really friendly and knowledgeable of the beers and stuff as well, was it? Yeah. And um yeah, two for two so far on absolutely cracking pubs. So, we’re going to head more into sort of Rodale Town. Rochdale. Got Rodale in the brain now at Colchester Town Center and um check out a few spots sort of in the main um drag of the uh city which I’m looking forward to cuz we’ve got a brewery tap. Um we’ve got I think sort of a more traditional pub potentially and I think a Belgian beer type outlet run by some enthusiasts. So, if it’s anything like the one we went to in Berry St. Edmunds, I I’m looking forward to it. Let’s put it that way. Um, yeah. So, it’s a little bit of a walk now, I think, to the next spot. But yeah, let’s try and enjoy the day and have a bit of a wander. See what Colchester is like. Right. So, we’re just coming up to the Marcus of Graanby now. the pub that we were going to pop into until the the fell at the magnet told us to go to Victoria instead, which this is a fantastic building. I’ll quickly cross over to show you it, but from what I can actually when I had a proper look online at the pictures and stuff, it seemed like it very much was a bit of a gastroey type spot with maybe a couple of handfuls on. So, I am glad we went to the Victoria instead. But it is worth having a look at this building cuz it’s gorgeous. The reason I didn’t want to pronounce the Roman name of this town is with that. I ain’t got a clue how to pronounce that. But yeah, they used to have like um chariot racing and stuff here. It’s the site of like one of five Roman stadiums or something in Britain. And I think this one were the largest and it could seat like 5,000 people which is just insane is it when you think about it how long ago that was 2,000 years ago basically. Yeah. There’s three wise monkeys and other monkey tap room. Oh we go. Both we were going to go to. Right. Yeah. We found the next spot. There’s the Three Wise Monkeys like pub and then the other monkey brewing tap room. It’s not I thought the Three Wise Monkeys were more sort of a traditional spot, but seems like a bit of a modern bar, but we’re going to go check it out anyway. Very craft heavy looking inside, but yeah, we’re going to go and have a look in now. Busy compared to the ones we’ve just been to. [Applause] Can I get half of the Colchester number one just thank you [Music] one that deep. Um Grace decided she didn’t want one cuz we couldn’t see if he had a gluten-free. It does look like actually that they have bottled [ __ ] but um that was it. So, she’s not that bothered about that anyway. So, I just got a swift half. I went for the Colchester Brewery number one, which is a best bitter. And um yeah, we’ll give it a go. To be fair, that is a really decent first bit. It’s lovely um malty bitterness as soon as you taste it and then it sort of mellows out as it goes along and has a bit of like a berry character to it like blackberry type thing. Very pleasant actually. Um which I’m surprised about. I weren’t 100% sure if this place were going to have caser that was up to scratch but yeah definitely does. So yeah, can’t that yeah unfortunately took a while to get served. Um not really my sort of scene but I’ll try and show you a bit inside. No chance of getting into the bar though. It’s just too much consistent busyness. So, yeah, we’ll see. I’ll show you what I show you and then we’re going to move on to the other monkey brewing tap house and see what that’s like. It might be just as busy. Um, but we’ll try it. Cheers. Yeah, to be fair, that is decent, even though it was about £5 a pint. So, a bit of a premium versus the other two we’ve been to. Yeah. Cheers. You ready? Yeah. Right. Yeah. We’re off next door now, so I won’t even bother sort of touching the camera. Uh other monkey brewing tap room. I’m guessing it’s owned by the same people. Looks like same sort of vibes. But yeah, we’ll check it out in here. You’re not going to take [Music] [Music] Yeah, currently there’s not even like anyone at the bar. So, it’s definitely the same like place, same sort of beers. But I was going to try this 10,000 lies best pizza bitter, but if there’s no one to serve me, I ain’t going to be trying it. [Music] We tried. Well, it can’t be said that we didn’t try. I don’t know if I’m like missing something by like maybe I’m supposed to get the beers in the the tap house, but there was no one at the bar and we stood there for ages and no one served us. So, just had to give up in the end as a bad job. Um yeah, it’s a shame cuz I was going to try their breweries bitter, but yeah, not going to happen. But we’ve got next the one I’m looking forward to possibly most today, the um the Belgium beer spot. But we’re going to take a quick detour and have a look at the castle cuz it’s right here. There is a pub like attached to the castle called the castle, but um I’ve heard it’s only all right, so I might give that a swerve. But I definitely want to have a look at this Norman Norman castle while we’re here. Here we go. Oh, the the cod of the castle. I don’t remember seeing that. Is that a craft beer place? Oh, it looks restauranty. Yeah. Yeah. Restaurant. It’s a restaurant. Restaurant. Do you want rocks and rubies? I don’t think they’ll sell yet. Yeah. So, [Music] where they gone? Yeah. So, this is Colchester Castle or at least like what’s left of it. Uh I think this was originally the keep. Uh and it’s the only bit that sort of remains intact, but it is a nor is it a Norman castle keep from the I think the la latter half of the 11th century, but it’s like the the largest of its kind in Europe. So, it is pretty significant. And uh like I say, it’s endured quite a bit over the years. It’s it was under siege in I think the 1200s for about 3 months. And um yeah, I just think it’s a pretty cool thing to see actually. We always like going to castles, don’t we? And just having a look and checking them out. Unfortunately, we can’t uh go inside today cuz we don’t have time. But it is home to Colchester Museum, I think it is. Uh and has been home to the museum for quite a while now. So yeah, if you’re in the area and you’ve got some time to kill, definitely I’d go in. They’re always good them sort of thing. Um, and yeah, so next on the list I think is the Belgian place which I’m looking forward to. Just wanted to have a quick wander up here and uh look at the castle basically. Uh, but yeah, let’s find this Belgian spot. Here we are now at the Queen Street Brew House, but it looks a bit on the shut side, would you say? Um, let’s have a look. Oh, it’s opening hours. Saturday 2:00 p.m. It’s got to be after 2:00 now. It’s Friday today. Oh, it’s Friday. Oh, yeah. It says 4. So, it might literally It’s literally 41. It’s 4:01 now. And it says it opens at 4. I’m just going to try the door. It’ll only uh It’ll only go wrong, won’t it? Is it It’s not open yet. In a minute. Good. Timed it. Well, then, didn’t we said he se Oh, yeah. Yeah. We’re back back down south for one. All right. Yeah. Not channel. Real’s real pubs. Oh yeah. Yeah. You we follow the pub. What’s the one we follow? Tweed. Tweedy. Oh, Tweed is great. I love Tweedy. You said 20 minutes. 20 minutes. We’ll go. Where? Where’s nearby? Oh, nice one. Cheers. Right. Yeah. So, it was four when we got there, luckily, but He says he’s not opening for 20 minutes yet. So, met some What’s your names, guys? Sorry. Trev. Matt. Matt. And what? J. Trev and Matt. Yeah. We met some uh very friendly guys who going to take us to the castle, another pub around here. So, going to ch get a swift or something like that and then head back there when it’s open. Yeah. We was over here yesterday cuz we went to see Skunk Canyon. They played last night over there with a smashing pumpkins. All right. Yeah. So, we was all in here. Really? Yeah. Is it busy? Yeah. Let’s get a get a drink. He’s delayed by 20 minutes. We just completely got rid of TV license and all that and just watch YouTube. Maybe occasionally some on Netflix. That’s it. I think all the like all like the um the reporters community go out. Yeah. Like citizen journalist. Can I get a half of landlord and a half of like Coke, please? Just full co. Oh yeah, that’s fine. Just the bottles then. Perfect. Cheers. Thank you. Yes. As I said, I recognized him straight away. I saw one video and he was down the side of his looking down this emergency staircase that went down and all that. They weren’t open. Here we go. Beer garden of the castle. And I’ve come all the way down here just to get half of Timmy Taylor’s. Uh I got landlord. They had I think golden vest on as well. But yeah, you got to go a landlord, aren’t you? So, let’s give this one a go. Yeah, that’s Landlord. You’ve seen me try it many a time on this channel before, but it’s a a great little drink in it. It’s easy to drink. So, yeah. Cheers. Not bad for a little bonus p. Nice one. [Music] the castle. Yeah, that was the castle, I think. Yeah, the castle. It’ll do. Um, yeah, not bad for a little like bonus pub, but it was a bit sort of um I don’t know, like night out bar type thing. Beer were really expensive. I think it was 620 a pint for a landlord. Uh, but still not a much better vibe than the last two places. Uh, we had a great chat with some locals and yeah, I quite enjoyed it in there to be honest with you. So, but yeah, we’re going back now to this Queen Street Brew House. Hopefully he’s opened cuz this is the one I was looking forward to going to. So, you better open up today. Yeah. Let’s have a look in. Get a get a Belgium beer. Something nice and strong. Oh, yeah. Open. Back door’s open. Go in the back. This door’s open here. Oh, he’s open. Yeah, it looked like we were in for another closure then, but he’s just opened it up for us. Let’s have a look in. [Music] Cheers. Yeah, good. This is my friend. On all corners, I’m going to do a pint of the uh Munich Her. Right, we’re here outside in the um Queen Street Brew House and uh they did have a lot of Belgian ales on offer, but I just fancied a a like a German Laggera, so I’ve gone for the Munich elves of some description. Um I’ve already had a swig. Very, very nice. But I’ll give it a go on camera now. Oh yeah, it’s just such a fantastic malty German laga. It’s just so easy drinking. just very um like well balanced I suppose. It’s not too much of anything. It’s just really easy drinking and just so refreshing in this weather. That’s just a great beer. I I do occasionally enjoy my uh decent German laggers and that is very much one of those. Cheers. [Music] Right. Yeah, we’re back out here in the Queen Street uh brew house garden cuz I’ve I’ve we’ve stuck about and we’ve got another beer. So, I’ve gone for a Westm double this time. A very dangerous I think 7 point something percent uh from from Belgium. So, yeah, let’s uh give it a go in this absolutely gorgeous uh I’ll spin it around so you can see. Absolutely gorgeous uh what’s the word for chalice? Would you say chalice? Yeah. Fantastic looking Trappist beer. Let’s give it a go. Blime me. So, I don’t know if I’ve ever had this out of cake before. I’ve only ever had it bottled before, but it’s so complex. It’s really hard to put a finger on what flavors I’m actually getting out of that. But it’s just so smooth for the percentage and like refreshing and fruity maybe. I just really there’s I’m getting about five flavors at once and I’m really struggling to tell you what they are. So yeah, I’m just not cut out for this like beer review type stuff, but yeah, great beer anyway and a great great uh spot. This might be my pub of the day so far. Just friendly locals, good beers, knowledgeable barman, um chilled out. It’s my kind of vibe, my kind of spot. Fantastic. Cheers. Right. Yeah, that was the uh Queen Street Brew House. We ended up staying in there for ages basically. I got a couple of drinks. You had a gin and tonic. We were chatting to um I got to remember names now. Trev, Matt, and Jay who we met uh just before when we went to the castle uh and then we stayed in there with them. Absolutely. Uh great crowd in that pub. Really friendly, decent beers, decent prices, great atmosphere. Yeah, couldn’t knock that spot. We’ve done fantastic so far in Colchester. Um, but we’ve got to we’ve had to leave them. Uh, it was a shame, but we’ve got two more pubs on our list and I don’t want to miss them because they’re both like opposite each other for starters. Good beer guys. Supposedly have eight cask beers on each. Um, and locally very well talked about from what we’ve discovered so far. So yeah, we got to check them out before we go. And um yeah. Yeah, we’re going to try and work our way through Colchester and find them basically. So I suppose let’s have a wander. I think it’s about 15 minutes walk now to the next these last two. So yeah, going to be a bit of a trek, but we’ll get there. Oh, here we go. Right. Yeah, we found both the ale house and the fat cat now. Um, I think we’ll probably do the ale house first since we’re here. So, yeah, let’s have a look in. Uh, both good beer guide pubs, I think. So, it should be good for real also. [Music] been coming [Music] down a lovely lunch. Hilarious. Right. [Music] God, it’s incredibly low bench this one. I don’t 100% trust it with my uh 6’1 nearly 20 stone frame, but uh yeah, we’ve gone for the house bitter. I think it was 215 for a half, so 430 a pint, something like that. Uh no idea what the brewery is or anything like that cuz it was just like sort of the the house one. But um yeah, they prefer cash in this spot. Uh which you know, fair place to them. We had some well I’d run out of cash but Grace had some cash on us so we paid cash. So yeah definitely if you have a note on yours if you come in here but uh let’s give this bitter a go. I’m looking forward to this actually. Feel like uh I could do with a nice refreshing bit in it. [Music] That is sort of your quintessential [Applause] standard bitter. That one. It’s very light with a bit of finish to it. Not a right lot else going on. Um, still perfectly pleasant, but it sort of does remind me of the bitters I’d get back in the day and you know the cheap house bitters that you’d find when you were a teenager and you were just looking for the cheapest drink possible. Does remind me of one of them. But yeah, I still enjoy it cuz it brings back those memories. [Music] Thank you very much. Thank you. Cheers. See you later. Right. Yeah, that was a swift visit into the ale house just for a quick half. Uh, great beer. It’s just like I say, it’s standard bitter. Uh, very friendly barmaids and uh, yeah, nice friendly locals vibe type pub, I suppose. But yeah, we’re going to keep that short cuz we’re going now straight into the fat cat over the road. So, let’s have a look in this spot. Have you got any gluten-free beers at all? Red peach. Sorry. I usually have one of these on the moment. Thank you. [Music] Yes, please. Mini beard. There you go. Right. Yeah, we found the mini beer garden, I suppose, here at the Fat Cat. And I’ve gone for a pint to finish off on of the Mighty Oak Brewery, Oscar Wild. Uh Mighty Oak’s a brewery in uh Mold Molden, is it? I think Molden. Um which is a place I’ve I really want to do a video, but I’ve not got around to yet. So, that might be a future southern trip. Uh but yeah, it looks really lovely and dark. I think it’s quite a low ABV, actually, though. You’ll see now in the uh I’ll put it in the in the post edit of what this beer actually is and how much it was. Cheers. Oh wow. Yeah. Super chocolatey and weirdly very slightly salty. It’s got like um you know like a like a chocolate with sea salt type character to it. And it’s very fullbodied given I’m pretty sure it’s a lower ABV. Um, yeah, great beer to finish on today because this is going to be the last pub of the day. But also, Grace has managed to get a uh gluten-free beer. I think it’s the from the actual brewery is from the Fat Brewery. Fat Cat. I don’t know if it’s this pub have an on-site brewery or if it’s just like a rebadge or something, but I’ll let her tell you about it. Yes. So, it’s from Pat Cat Brewery. It’s called Tom Cat and it’s a session IPA. So, going to give this one a go. Looks like an ice cream. Yeah. Bar lady put it in a glass which is nice. It’s a bottle, was it? Yeah, it was in a bottle. It’s very nice. Quite fruity and refreshing. Quite happy as you’d expect. Um, but yeah, delicious and free. Cheers. [Applause] straight away. Good. Thank you. [Music] four people. [Music] Right. Yeah, that was the Fat Cat. Great pub to finish on actually today. Um, probably preferred it over the Ale House, but I couldn’t really tell you why I preferred it over the Ae House. They’re both great spots. I just I don’t know, just quite like the vibe in there slightly more, I suppose. Um, yeah, it was a great uh crawl today, actually. do was Colchester. Very pleasantly surprised as I often am with the the pub crawls I do in the south of England to be honest with you. I’m always I don’t know just my bias. I’m not expecting loads from them and then they always deliver really well. So yeah trying to think about what my pub of the day was really and it’s a really hard choice because I really liked the magnet. I really liked Victoria and I really like the Queen Street Brew House. They’re easily sort of competing here for me. What did you think about it? Really? I think that we’ve just listed my favorites as well. Um it’s cuz they all had different quirks, didn’t they? So yeah, every pub today sort of had its own thing going on, didn’t it? Really? Yeah. Um, it’s really hard to sort of choose. Uh, I mean, let me know in the comments what you thought was the the best because yeah, like I said, it’s probably between those three, but it’s hard to pick one to be honest with you. Um, and yeah, hopefully you’ll have heard some of the the music that I put on over the sort of the pub shops today. Um, and it’s a bit different to normal. If all goes to plan, it’s a bit different to normal because uh, we met three lads in um, originally outside the Queen Street Brew House, Trev, Jay, and Matt. And Trev does his own music and he said that we can use it for this video. So, yeah, if you I’ll put a link in the description below to his music either way. But hopefully again you’ll have heard some of it um on the pub shops today. And uh yeah, I suppose for from us. Oh, and uh before we go quickly. Yeah, I um again we’re in town today down south because I’m doing a London a private London uh pub tour for uh some American guys that are keen on being shown around some pubs in the area. So, on my buy me a coffee, which is in the description, there is a shop page and that has access to both my private pub tours and um like a one-on-one Zoom call. So, a Zoom call. So, if you want to plan a pub crawl, you can do it on there. And at the minute until from now until the end of September, I’m doing a 10% discount on those services and anything else I might add to the the buy me a coffee shop uh of 10%. So if you put in the code R A R P10 uh like real als uh you’ll get 10% off those. So, if you’re fancying coming along with me on a pub crawl and uh me showing you around some pubs in various cities across the UK, then um yeah, give that a go, I suppose. And uh yeah, we should have a good time. So, yeah, we’ll see you in the next one. Remember, support your local pub. Cheers. [Music]

  1. As a Colchester resident am glad you enjoyed your visit, can confirm you visited most of the best pubs for real ale. The Ale House is always welcoming while at nighttime the Fat Cat tends to get a high proportion of older pissed estate agent types in red cords. Shame you didnt visit the Spoons as 60 per cent of the town is usually in there

  2. Good video mate, you missed, but unfortunately, you missed two brilliant pubs, "Two brews," and "The odd one out," which has the best beer garden in Colchester, also with the other monkey's tap room, there's an upstairs and other bar, the staff a normally up there alot, it's actually really nice bar, but just taproom part, I don't normally go in the Three monkey's itself!

  3. In the second pub – was one your beers a Kölsch? This is an interesting beer style because they are actually made with ale yeast and fermented hotter than lagers, but they are clean with subtle floral and fruit – like lagers. Great beer style.

  4. Interesting. Many of the pubs I went in 35 years ago are all gone now. Buck's Horns and The Six Bells (now a huge Tesco) in Greenstead Road. I think the Centurian on Greenstead Estate, closed as well. That was a flat roof pub, and I went in once with my mate Mutant John. They were all in sharrp decline then. I lived opposite the Six Bells for a while just before it was closed and knocked down. There was also a bookies (Coral?) on the corner of Hythe Hill we sometimes used to go in on a Saturday afternoon to place small bets and do totes. There was a burger van next to the level crossing by Hythe Station as well, which was open late, or you could walk up the hill to Rose Kebab. Everything you needed, more or less on your doorstep! Beijing was new then at the end of Greenstead Rd – still open – still the best Chinese takeaway in the area.

  5. The Fat Cat is my local & my favourite of all the pubs you went to. Three Wise Monkeys actually looked quite quiet inside compared to a weekend evening. Another good spot is Two Brews which has an on licence.
Definitely worth a visit to Maldon as well

  6. Really interesting to see an outsider's perspective on our pubs. I've made a mental note to try the Magnet. In its previous incarnation at the Norfolk was dire and the only pub in Colly where I have ever been arbitrarily threatened. I get to most of the others on your list from time to time, even the Castle. My most regular visits are the Fat Cat and Two Brews which has the biggest selection of beers in Colchester (large and diverse onsales). I guess as your blog is entitled Real Ales the Two Brews might fall short because it has no cask ales, nor any traditional British bottle conditioned ales. I would go to the Victoria much more often, except I live on the other end of the City Centre and my dog would moan if I walked that far. I agree with others in that the pub you should have gone to (notwithstanding the Two Brews) is the Oddie.

  7. This video is a real eye opener…
First, I wasn’t aware Skunk anasie played in Colchester….
And some of these pubs I was not aware had improved over the years..

  8. Peiskos porter 😜Peiskos (noun)- Peiskos is an event, it's when you sit in front of the fireplace and having a good time. Peis translates to fireplace, and kos can mean having a good time and it can also mean cuddle, enjoyment and cozy.🇧🇻

  9. A good watch. I do a few vlogs and wondered if you have a hidden camera, just go for it or ask permission etc. as no one seemed bothered about their camera. Thx
