I’ve got a Salsa Journeyman that is on 27.5×2.2 with the Shimano Sora. I love it and I’ve found the weak link to be the Promax DSK.-330R They are always chattering and squeaking and matter how much I adjust. The stopping power is ok but lots left to be desired. I mainly commute with it ~10 miles a day and then take it on gravel rides and even bikepack on the weekends. I’ve heard people rave over Klampers, but it is way out of my price. I can get some TRP Spyre C for $50, Juno Tech F1 for $75 and I was also considering HY/RD. What do I do? I am looking for very good breaking power yet easy to adjust and reliable for bikepacking.

  2. All these options are nice, but they will never come close to real hydro brakes. Source: I have one of the cheapest hydro groupsets (10s Tiagra), and a friend has the Spyre.

Now, you know your budget, but at least have a look at how much It will cost you to upgrade the full groupset to Tiagra (minus selling your Sora second-hand).
