Cycling the Roger Lapébie Greenway near Bordeaux on EuroVelo 3 was an unforgettable and unexpected experience. From the vineyards of Saint-Émilion to the tunnels, bridges, and old train stations turned into cafés, this 55 km cycle path is one of the best bike trails in France. Named after Tour de France winner Roger Lapébie, this former railway line is now a paved, safe, and scenic greenway for cyclists, walkers, and families. Perfect for long-distance bike touring or a day trip to Bordeaux.

[Music] When I left St. Emilion, I thought my day was all about wineards, country roads, and the push to Bordeaux. I was a little rushed. Maybe I planned a day that was too long. But then something unexpected happened. I turned right without even realizing it. I suddenly found myself on one of the most beautiful greenways of my entire journey, the Roger Leap Bike Path. This greenway is built on an old railway line that once connected Porto to Soften. The train stopped running in the 1970s and instead of letting it rot, the region decided to give it a new life as a cycling and walking path. They named it after Roger Lep, a French cyclist and local hero who won the tour to France in 1937. It’s a tribute not only to cycling history, but also to the idea that old infrastructure can be reborn for people to enjoy in new ways. And I have to say, I love this concept. I love trains. I love engineering. And when a country takes the time to transform a forgotten railway into something so inviting, it makes me feel welcome. It makes me want to come back. The path itself is 55 km long, paved, flat, and shaded. It passes through tunnels, stone bridges, and old railway stations that have been turned into cafes and picnic spots. Riding through the tunnels with their cool air was great. But my favorite stop was Latran de Loo. Here they placed real trains back on the tracks almost like a small open air museum. For someone who loved trains as much as I do, it was the perfect reminder of the line’s history and the people who once travel through this valley. For cyclist, this greenway is a gift. It’s well-maintained, safe, and completely separate from traffic. Perfect if you’re on a long distance ride like Uro 3, or if you’re just out for a family day trip. My gravel bike with a 45 mm tires was of course more than enough, but honestly, you don’t need a gravel bike here. Any bike will do, even a city bike. So if you’re planning a ride toward Porto, don’t miss this one. Start from Suare Teuan or Kon and just let the greenway guide you. You will finish right at the doorstep of Porto, ready for a glass of wine and a good meal. For me, it was an expected surprise and sometimes those are the best parts of the journey. Next week, I will share another highlight from this journey. Until then, thanks for watching and don’t forget to subscribe for more adventures.

  1. Wow, I just read the description to your channel and that is so impressive. I have a similar story but on a much smaller scale.

I first went Bikepacking solo in March 2024 and I weighed 110kg. Since then I arranged another trip with 3 friends and I realised I needed to lose some weight. With Bikepacking and my training for trips I've managed to lose 22kg.

However, your story is beyond fantastic! You have really made some changes and you're an inspiration to others.

I'm on a Bikepacking trip in just over 2 weeks time when I cycle around the complete coastline of Sardinia. I, too, am a huge foodie but I do feel so much better now, knowing I've earned the calories I'm eating!

I'm hoping I can put a few videos up of Sardinia in a few weeks time and hopefully some delicious meals too.

You have a great channel and I'll be following you and trying to make my videos as engaging!
