Les coureurs du Tour de Grande-Bretagne avaient rendez-vous ce samedi avec l’étape reine de cette 21e édition ! Après la victoire de Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) la veille, les principaux prétendants à la victoire au classement général allaient s’expliquer dans la monté de The Thumble (5.5 km à 7.3%), dont le sommet constituait l’arrivée de cette 5e étape. Finalement, malgré plusieurs attaques des favoris, notamment de Pavel Sivakov (UAE Team Emirates XRG) et d’Oscar Onley (Team Picnic PostNL), c’est un sprint en petit comité qui s’est disputé au sommet et qui a souri à Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step). Le champion olympique lève les bras dès sa course de reprise et s’est imposé devant Thomas Gloag (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) et Oscar Onley. Même s’il ne s’est pas montré à son aise dans l’ultime ascension, Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) a bien géré son effort et termine à une belle 5e place, dans le même temps que le Belge. Le Français conserve son maillot vert de leader mais devra encore batailler pour remporter ce Tour de Grande-Bretagne, qui pourrait se jouer aux bonifications à l’issue de la 6e étape ce dimanche.

The 19-year-old American on the front for the Inos Grenaders here. Just knocks off the pressure, knocks off the tempo. Remco Aapore hands on the drops just trying to line this one up. Civicov on the inside. And here comes Julian Alfallet just in into your shot now in that black jersey. Paleo Bill Bao is going to try and lead this one out for Ulleio. Lisa Mike so is Oscar on Remco aort up towards the summit. Aanapool coming through at the top of the tumble. Remco a takes the win ahead of clo and only he matched everyone.
