As the title states this will be my first mountain bike ever. I am getting into this with a cousin who also is just started. I'm pretty sure it is going to be light trails/hills in forest preserve areas primarily. Being a first bike and being new to this, I do not want to go full hog and spend a crazy amount of money.
I found what appears to be a good deal on what I think is a Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2. They want $375 for it but I would feel better if someone that actually knows something at least weighed in.

My first bike was a Marlin and it treated me well, I abused the hell out of it and eventually upgraded. Can’t go wrong for that price. Maybe see if you can get it down to $300.
With budget bikes people often don’t maintain them. I’d ask what maintenance he has had done. Has the fork been serviced? Breaks bleed? And of the cables or chain ever been replaced?. When you take it for a ride check that it shifts smoothly between all gears if not that will also need a service. One big thing to check is cracks in the frame but I don’t think that is likely
It’s hard to price that out because to be honest a full service where I am will cost about 200$-300$ which doubles what you are already paying
