Schwinn made something like this in the 1970’s. So did Raleigh. I’m sure stores like Sears had their own house brands. My cousin had a bike of that style, I tried it, it wasn’t bad. It was a 5 speed. Although I repaired it for him I do not remember the brand.

I didn’t have a speedometer on mine, but this took me way back to the late 80’s and the Kent Fusion BMX bike with the “stick” 5-speed shifter, I loved that stupid shifter:
