Very similar in Canada. If you want to murder someone and get off with a slap on the wrist, make sure you are driving a car and they are riding a bike.

I was sentenced to four years in prison with five years of probation for $125 worth of weed.
The fact that this guy got sentenced to a year, one year of drug testing, and lost his license for six months is crazy to me.
Edit to add: I was a first time nonviolent offender. I have been arrested once in my entire life, and that was the sentence they gave me.
