Borrowing a friend's u lock to see if it'd fit my bike. I was looking for one that's small enough to resit prying or leaving a large gap. It's a kryptonite, about 4×8 inches usable space.

I can't easily fit it around the seat post, rear wheel and a pole or stand. As pictured looks like my best bet as it includes the wheel and rear seat stays, but it's still quite limited on remaining space.

Any obvious suggestions I've not seen? Id rather avoid bumping it into the frame repeatedly as I try to fit it around the brakes, frame and spokes.

  1. You don’t have to put it around both stays, a thief can’t get the lock off either way. You can also just lock the wheel (inside the triangle) to the post or whatever. The ol sheldon method.

  2. Can you fit it around the front wheel/downtube/lock point? Thats equally as good as the rear and sometimes has more clearance.

The goal is to secure the bike frame to a post. A serious thief will have power tools to cut your lock anyway. You are only protecting your bike against kids who might otherwise take it for a joyride.

  4. Move it up a bit to include both the frame and the wheel – not just the spokes. Looks like there’s enough space to get around the fender and rim.

If the front wheel is quick release, either remove it and lock it to the post with frame and back wheel (preferred), or use a thick chain connected to the U-Lock to secure the front wheel.

If the saddle is quick release, or if you have a quality saddle like a Brooks, ensure that the saddle is locked to the frame. I use a small ABUS chain for this and have the saddle locked to the bike at all times.
