Looks like the quick link. Maybe it wasn’t all the way engaged? Luckily all you have to do is put a new quick link on there.

Just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’ve only ever done it when putting the power down too soon when shifting. With it being the quick link, at least it’s an easy fix.

  3. Go to a local bike store and ask for a quick link. Super easy to install, just watch a YouTube video.

  4. Thank you all for your answers, I‘ll just buy a new quick link and replace it thanks to your help !

  5. Exploded is a bit over dramatic looks more like a pin failed. Happens sometimes not as often now that chains tend to be riveted but still occasionally. Use a chain tool to remove the damaged link, rejoin with a quicklink and carry on

Worn chain link and tension will cause it to break. You need to clean and lubricate the chain at intervals and check for wear.

I’ve done that! I shifted under load, which damaged a link. The chain failed the following ride.

  8. Get a new chain, count the links in the old one and match the new one and fit it to the bike and done

  9. Please do not try to fix this. Tell the owner it happened and ask how they want to proceed.

It sounds like you don’t know what you’re doing. Fine, most of us don’t and it’s easy to make a mistake in threading a chain. But you can definitely make this worse by doing it even slightly wrong.

I ride an expensive bike. On the wildly unlikely chance I let someone ride it, I would not want them tinkering with my drivetrain and potentially causing more damage to the bike or me.

Chains break. The owner will understand that and either fix it or get it fixed. But if you give it back after thinking you fixed it and the quick link gets jammed, it could result in a hell of a lot more expensive damage or injury.

  10. Could be a defect in chain (happens), perfect storm of chain not lining up as you crank it through cogs, or you’re a breast! Easy fix with a quick link. Also handy for service later

  11. Quick link was probably not connected correctly. But it’s a super easy $5 fix, and anyone who has a bike should own the replacements already, just like spare tubes or sealant and darts etc.
