Hello all! I’m coming to Reddit for my bike questions because I really, really don’t know how to find my answer through Google. I don’t know the build/model of my bike, I’ve had it since I was a young teen. I really just want to know if…. THIS…. Is an issue. The cable. I have had issues with changing gears, specifically shifting to a lower gear. I don’t know much about bikes or bike repairs but with how many issues I’ve started to have with this bike I’m being forced to learn repairs on my own. I’m planning on taking it to a repair shop this weekend, but I’d really like to know if this is even an issue. I’m fully assuming that it is, and I will be thoroughly surprised if it’s not. If that is your shifter cable housing you need to replace the housing and cable. Shouldn’t cost too much. You could do it yourself easily. Just find a video of how to replace a shifter cable on a mountain bike shifter and then how to tune your derailleur if it doesn’t want to shift correctly.
It’s pretty straightforward and easy to change a shifter cable but it’s a lot easier when you’ve got a good pair of cable – specific cutters.
Anyway, you’ll need a cable and some housing. Hard to tell how much housing as the pic doesn’t show but if it were me I’d replace whatever amount of cable you have from the shifter to the derailleur.
