Hi there, I want to start cycling around the city and paved trails mainly on weekends. I have no experience whatsoever with bikes. So my 2 questions are: 1) is this worth $150? 2) would a 53cm bike work for me being a 5’8” men?

Looks really good for $150. Bike might fit. Sloping top tube frame makes bikes more versatile IMO. But, trying it out is best way to know.
