Hey legends,

My partner and I are eyeing up Japan next year and we are keen to start from Fukuoka and make our way to Tokyo. At this stage I'm thinking we take the route for the first part of our trip in the attached pics but honestly I'm just winging it. Thought it would be wise to see if anyone has done this route (roughly). I've seen a couple of posts outlining the coastal route but we are the adventurous types and want to take the roads less traveled.

If anyone is keen please share experiences from any multiweek tour in Japan.

We are also looking for long term storage of our luggage (multiple suitcases) in Tokyo – any service that is affordable if anyone has any recs (I can't find any online) please let us know!

So far we are thinking

  • 6 weeks and if time slips away from us gun it for the shinkansen to make our flights out of Japan.
  • mostly camping where possible (when we can't camp just find accommodation, also onsens and ryokans)
  • we aren't bringing heaps of gear – basic setups
  • don't mind big days on the saddle / big climbs
  • the less people (tourists) the better
  • swing by larger urban areas along the way to see the sights and sounds but keep mostly on the bike.

Thanks heaps team.

Depends on the exact time of year a lot, but I would include a way down to Shikoku (via the Shimanami Kaido for example). There are some great routes to be found there (UFOline) with big climbs and minimal habitation. After find your way back (ferry) to Kyoto and Tokyo.

You could maybe do a bit more with that many weeks and include the Nagano area after Kyoto.

Nice map with onsen and (free) campsites:
