I’ve seen a lot of posts about 7000 builds. I don’t want to get in over my head for someone with very little experience but not against fixing it up. I just don’t want to have to put $500 into it to get it useable
That’s an old one. I would be surprised if the fork is still good. The tires are flat so you’d need to deal with that. Two tubes will probably be about $20.
What kind of riding are you planning on doing? Depending on that, you may need new tires, which may run about $60 for two on the low end.
Do you have a max budget you’d spend on another bike?

Photos are not very sharp, but at first glance, looks like a lot of stuff in the transmission is full of rust. You might want to take a closer look if possible.

Personally $50 hell yes for casual and gravel riding IF it all works, but judge it more in person and maybe offer lower if there’s rust. And other issues. Still a cool bike

This is a solid Trek frame built before they ditched the older gen geo HT’s like a red headed step child. A well built, double butted frame with 7000 series aluminum. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that bike (frame) for trail riding. Many hundreds of people won races on that same frame.
The parts are the larger concern. You’ll want a true and tension, new pads, a new chain and cassette – and probably tires/grips. That’ll set you back $150-250. Shock rebuild kit a monkey could do would be about $50.

It’s fine and worth $50.
