It looks like the your Brompton needs more care – all the rust on the chain and on the hub gear chain is not helping on a smooth change or a smooth ride.

Lubrication might be the magic word as first aid.

  2. It’s a sin to let any bike get this dirty and photograph it without a clean-and-chain-oiled after photo. You have almost $2000 to burn? Fine. Do it privately.

  3. first of all, get a bike wash soon pls? excessive sand (Silica) will eat out your chain and sprockets much faster than a normal, clean drivetrain.

the problem u have might stem from cable expansion for the gear hub. u need to realign the pull pin again so that the gear hub is getting the right pull positions for all gears. there are handful of videos covering this on Youtube, if you aren’t capable of doing it yourself, pls bring the bike to nearest local Brompton shop (LBS) or Brompton Junction

  4. Have you tried looking up a video on YouTube on how to adjust the gears on a Sturmey Archer hub? Small hint, that ring that you see isn’t supposed to be at the location it is now in and it serves a purpose.

Also more than highly suggest you watch some YouTube clips on how to maintain a Brompton, some cleaning and oil might get involved.

Your hub gears are probably completely out of alignment as your lock nut isn’t done up and your shifting chain is being held on by about two threads, also wash and lube your bike it’s no wonder it’s not performing well when it’s in this state.

I can never leave my C Line Explore in that condition. I clean mine after every ride, though my gear indicator chain remains rusty, but I still clean it and apply some lube on it.

Give your bike a clean, especially the drivetrain and it’ll stay healthy for longer.
