Hello everyone! I have a speed bike already but have moved and need to buy a new one, though I have no experience with the world of vintage bikes. They are both Peugeot's from 1980~ and the price is similar at €100 for the first and €85 for the second one.

These seem like incredibly good deals compared to the prices I used to know. But I'm really in need for a bike ASAP and have come to these last two but can't decide. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

  1. Sorry forgot the specifications of the second one (which is way better documented than the first):

    • Model: Peugeot P8S “Bourgogne”
    • Estimated year: 1982
    • Frame size: M-L
    • Color: Pearl white with “Burgundy” livery

    ⚙️ Specifications
    • Frame / Fork: Hi-Ten steel, robust and comfortable
    • Drivetrain: Simplex parallelogram derailleur, typical of the 80s
    • Crankset: Keyed
    • Brakes: Dual-position shifters
    • Wheels: Rims compatible with 28″ tires, 95 mm fork spacing.

The brake pads are new, the cables and housing are recent, and the drivetrain works perfectly. The front and rear lights are broken, in case you missed them.

Dude, either of these bikes are going to require a lot of faff to keep them running well.

Look for something with a modern brake caliper, like a dual pivot side pull, and look for something with 700c wheels. Trust me on this one.

You’re not going to like the answer but unless you’re really savvy at fixing up bikes, neither of these will be a good fit.

It seems enticing to get a bike for so cheap, but the components are likely going to be old and crap out sooner rather than later.

You’re better off spending €300 now and have a reliable, modern bike. Best case scenario on these you end up getting some moderate use and need repairs. Worst case and most commonly, something’s going to break, it’s gonna be frustrating to fix because everything is so dated and rusted and you won’t be able to find the parts or be able to smoothly adjust anything, and you’ll chuck it in a basement or garage in frustration and say you’ll fix it later. But never will, and it will sit there forever, and your €80 will be wasted.

These old bikes are really cool looking and fun but typically just not worth it.
