In this video we start at Gas street basin where the Birmingham main line canal meets the Worcester & Birmingham canal. We cycle from here through the Birmingham suburbs, passing Edgbaston and Bournville before diverting over the Wast hill tunnel. We then continue to Worcester heading over the other tunnels along the way, Shortwood tunnel, Tardebigge tunnel and finally the Dunhampstead tunnel before heading through Worcester to the River Severn.

  1. I cycled the path over Shortwood tunnel in winter about 30 years ago and vowed never to do it again. It was terribly muddy. I’m grateful to you for showing me that I was right to stick to that resolution!

Excellent video and route suggestions. I also like going down the Droitwich canal and up Newland Lane, rejoining at Offerton Bridge.

  2. Excellent video! I know this area pretty well (I live in Rubery) and have walked and cycled all or part of the route many times. First time I rode to Tardebigge, I also (like you) crossed the Bromsgrove Highway because that's what OS maps would indicate that you do, crossing the stile and then dicing with death crossing the very unpleasant highway. Since then, I have not done it that way again. Instead of entering the field, I take a left, and then a right underneath Bromsgrove Highway. (I'm guessing that is probably on your diversion route).

This is a very clearly explained and helpful guide for anybody wishing to do that route, including many interesting historical notes. I don't know when all those trees fell, but maybe that's a sign I haven't been down there in a year or so.
