I did my first long ride (~65km) on my first fixed gear, which I built earlier this year.

My first thought today is: Fuck me, my legs are dead! I commute 150km a week on a steel, 49:16 single speed, and do regular long rides on a steel road bike. My legs never felt like this, we weren't even going fast!

Second: I figured out skidding yesterday. I found it MUCH easier with a brake on. I tried riding brakeless to start, just around my local area. With a brake I had so much more confidence that if something went wrong, I'd still be able to stop. It gave me the confidence to actually do hills, slow down into intersections etc. I don't think I'll be losing the brake, ever.

Thirdly: SO MUCH FUN

I know too many people who have ate shit riding break less. Rear ending cars, or dropping their chain on a hill and fucking splatting. Not worth it IMO.
