Would love to get into longer rides besides my commute to work (about 6 miles). Would also love a bit of advice on gear and maintenance. The bike was sold as a 1980’s Fuji Royale II. All original parts it seems. I added a bike rack and new handlebar tape. I had to remove the hoods on the brakes due to them being super old and cracked. I’ve done basic drivetrain cleaning but am unsure if such an old bike needs anything new. Let me know what you think of the bike and tips on how to extend its life and ride a million miles. Thanks!

My first commute was 14 miles each way to UW on a bike like that long ago, so I’d say it’s perfect 😉 nice tires.
Some don’t like downtube shifters but I’ll say their fine, easy to fix anthing. I commuted with basic tools, tube, pump, patch kit. You can youtube any repairs. Make sure nothing is loose (like brake cable bolt, don’t want slip when you slam brake in emergency.) Youtube how to grease and adjust bearings so not too loose or tight but you don’t have to do that often.

Sweet looking ride, love the gold rims. I would repack the wheel and bottom bracket bearings. The old grease is likely as hard as stone. Might as well do the pedal bearings while you are at it. Add new brake lever hoods for a much better grip and comfort.

  3. cool vintage bike. Is it Val-Lite tubing? I had 2 of those frames and got many miles out of them (in all weather from 20⁰ to 100⁰). Why did u choose this one, since even at such a low price there must have been other more modern bikes available?.I do like the condition of it. Enjoy…

never understood why they’d install the brake levers so damn high, how are you supposed to brake like that; it seems to be the most inconvenient way to brake
