So the elimination of the de minimis shipping exception started yesterday, and already 25 countries have ceased shipping mail to the US, because the rules are impossible to comply with.

The federal government wants shippers to pay tariffs (which, as we've all been forced to learn this year, ain't how it works). So, did the federal government implement a system whereby shippers could calculate and pay said tariffs?

No. They just made the change and said "this is what is happening" and couldn't be bothered to make it achievable.

So rather than become the middleman and whipping boy, the postal services of 25 countries have suspended mail to the US.

The US Fascist Dictator in Chief actually found a way to Embargo his own country. What a dumb ass.

  3. A little history lesson:

In the US the De Minimis exemption started in 1930 and was $10
In 1994, it was raised to $200
In 2016, it was raised to $800, considered the highest amount amongst the World’s largest economies
In May of 2026, it was removed for shipments from China and Hong Kong
On August 29, 2026, it was removed from the rest of the World.

De Minimis exemptions for other countries:

European Union: €150 (~$160 USD) for duty-free, €0 threshold for VAT, which is 17% to 27%
    UK: £135 (~$170 USD)
    China: ¥50 (~$7 USD)
Canada: CAD $40 (taxes) and CAD $150 (duties)
    Japan: ¥10,000 (~$70 USD)

Tell me any kits you are ordering would not be subject to tariffs/taxes if you were in any of those countries and ordering from the US.

All the shippers that won’t ship to us now have been shipping items over $800 for a long time; they are familiar with paying the tariffs. It’s just grandstanding. It will be a week’s pause, and things will return to normal, but they will be quiet about it.

I’m in France, pre-Brexit ordered a lot of stuff from the UK. Our costs went up by about 35 percent, so bye-bye UK shipments. Also, we in Europe pay 20 pct VAT on stuff that Americans didn’t…so I guess things have more or less equalized for US buyers?
