what brand chain was it?
A reminder to run a brake on the street.
Hope you are ok
Is that a 1/8″ chain? Or a regular chain? Chains for geared bikes really aren’t built with the same beef of a track chain, so they have a chance to fail under fixed gear loads. Track chains can break too, but it would probably be under pro race settings. I’ve never broken a chain in 20 years of riding fixies, which is anecdotal, of course. It’s just unlikely track chains break.
Happens. The stress on a brakeless chain is insane and they fail. It’s usually a simple crash when the chain binds up in the rear hub and sprocket and you skid out. Time for a new set that is more sturdy for your riding. Glad your safe!
Definitely sketchy. Happy no injuries.
So it didn’t skip off and jam before breaking?
Is it broken at where you joined it by any chance?
I’ve snapped a chain after it’s skipped off the cog (running track-slack on a shitty surface road). Otherwise I usually see chains fail where they weren’t joined quite right or a worn out quick link or similar.
Izumi Super Toughness is worth it if you’re going to be stressing your drivetrain sans brakes
And this is why I still always run a brake…
Improper installation
Nightmare. I had a cheap lockring crack once and my cog spun itself free.
Unrelated but shout-out for the fair dale skate rack. Love mine.
