Hi all, looking for a bit of community wisdom on a repair quote after an accident.

The short story: another cyclist jumped a light and we collided. He was very polite and fair, and agreed to cover the damage to my bike. The impact visibly damaged my front wheel and fork on my Pinnacle Neon 3.

I took it to Nip Nip Bike Repairs for an assessment and just received their invoice for the potential repairs. I'll be honest, the total cost has given me a bit of sticker shock.

I fully believe in paying for quality work, especially for safety-critical parts like a fork, but I also have a responsibility to the other guy not to overpay. I want to be 100% fair.

Would anyone be willing to take a look at the cost breakdown? I'm happy to provide the details (or a rough overview) if that helps. I'm mostly looking to understand:

· Are the parts prices reasonable?
· Does the labour cost seem standard?
· Is there anything on the quote that seems unnecessary for the damage described?

My main question is: Is this quote in the expected ballpark, and is it standard practice to get a second quote in this situation?

The bike was well-loved, so I just want it back to its former self without causing any drama. Cheers for any insights you can offer.

That carbon fork for £500 is very very very pricey (my full carbon bike cost £800 new), but everything else is reasonable.

You’d be better off buying a new bike tbh.

  2. So they’re planning to replace your fork with one that’s incompatible with your brakes and wheelhubs, then sell you the compatible parts.

Also… £30 to put a wheel on? I think they’re taking the piss.

There is a very expensive set of forks on there. And £171 worth of stuff exclusively to do with the back wheel which seems unnecessary from what you’ve said. And a total of £81 for mudguards and fitting of mudguards you don’t need replacing.

This reads like the shop think the insurance is paying – and as people do they imagine that means it’s free money – not a payout that puts the cost of insurance up for us all.

  4. It seems like your bike needs a lot of work. Get a 2nd opinion but be prepared to just buy a new bike.

  5. Nah. There’s too much padding in this. You could buy all the tools required for what they are quoting and do it yourself. Nothing here is beyond someone with basic skills.
Or you could get the parts for about 2/3rds their quote, or significantly better upgrades for the same price.
Labour is at a rate I’d expect for more complex work/specialist tools but not that bad. It’s just that all together it’s more than your bikes worth. No disrespect but Neon 2is listed for about £600 right now at Evan’s with a 105 groupset 11 speed

Ask the guy for £450/500 and pay the difference yourself as your upgrading.
There’s probably £60-100 worth of parts left on your old bike depending on condition. Maybe offer this to him.
He’s being decent so don’t ruin him.

Buy the above new on cycle to work and you will get the 6week service for free and get yourself some new kit.

Edit just noticed the 2 has an Alu fork but they also have a trek fx3 with carbon fork and deore groupset for 699. For sure there is lots of other options. Especially second hand.

  6. Isn’t this a quote to give to your home insurance company to get a payout? It’s not a a real ‘fix this’ quote.

  7. Did they already charge £80 for putting the quote together?
I don’t believe in doing such work for free, sure. But £80?

Rip-off Britain in a Quote there!

I live in Portugal and happy to support my LBS’s but when I was back living in the UK for a couple of years recently, I was shocked at what bike shops charge for labour etc – I soon bought the tools I was missing and did all the work myself.

  9. NipNip Canary Wharf installed an incorrect headset bearing on my carbon bike, which resulted in a crack developing in the lower headset cup. The bike was toast due to the crack. Luckily I had insurance. The store denied their incorrect part install caused the damage, then CEO claimed their ‘industry leading best in the business mechanic’ concluded I had been in a car crash.

A higher end store found the fault. Which NipNip refused to accept. It was shameful and they are black listed for life.

    Avoid NipNip.

  10. The prices seem reasonable and it’s probably necessary because they can’t source your original fork. That said, it’s a waste of money. You can get a newer and better bike to replace this one for less money.

  11. I’m gonna say if “misc parts” are your biggest expense, you’re getting ripped off.

  12. More than 50 quid to put on the wheels? and 640 quid total for misc parts? Me thinks you are getting ripped off. May as well buy an new bike.
