I finally pulled the trigger on a Poseidon X Gen 3 and just finished getting it assembled (new pedals coming tomorrow). I’ve got a day off work and plan to start putting in some miles over Labor Day weekend.

This will be my first real step toward bicycle touring, and I’m both excited and a little nervous. I’m not rushing into a long trip yet, just getting comfortable and building a base.

For those of you with more experience—any beginner tips for setting up or breaking in a new bike for touring? Things you wish you knew when you started?

(P.S. Forgive the DIY bike stand in the photo—I know I spent a decent chunk on the bike but couldn’t justify a proper stand… yet 😅)

  1. Rotate the handle bars down – unless you want to permanently damage your ulnar nerves. Adjust for fit and comfort first, will take several.rides what’s comfortable.

Best advice is just do it. Start with a shake-out ride (pack everything, put it on the bike, go for a long ride). Then go on a short over-nighter. That’ll help you to know what’s actually useful to pack. Then you just have to plan a tour and go!
