I’ve had my M6L since 2012 but just joined this forum. I get curious about this every time I pump up my tube but never figured out what it signifies. Any help would be appreciated!
I would assume its about the breaking surface of the rim. Over time and with usage of the rim break the rim will get thinner until it’a prone to failure, possible giving in under your weight. Thats why you should regularly check how badly the surface is already worn down. Typically its carving in. If the carve is really noticeable, better get a new rim. But it should hold out a long time before that happens.

Could be a “wear indicator; see manual”. Usually when a machined sidewall groove on a rim braked wheel disappears , the walls are too thin to be safe and requires the rim to be replaced. If you do not have the manual, you could write to the wheel manufacturer for the specific specs of the wheel in question.
