Swapfiets is a bike subscription. It’s a simple concept – you get a (relatively good) bike, and if it breaks or something, you get a new one almost immediately. All for a fixed monthly price. But is it worth it?

  1. I have an electric Swapfiets and I use it everyday to commute to work. Even though it is pricy (close to 500kr/month) to buy an e-bike of equivalent quality would take a huge amount of capital which I am not prepared to do, plus the added stress of having it stolen and the added expense of feeling the need to purchase insurance in case it gets stolen. For these reasons, this subscription model works well for me.

  2. I bought my first bike for 800kr and sold it for 500 (only once I had flat tire which i repaired myself). (So 2nd hand option is best for short term; but keep away from scammers and spend some time to find a good deal)

  3. Just swapped my Swapfiets to Copenhagen Bike Shop for 149kr./mo. A nice new 7 gear bike with even a basket included. Also feels good to support smaller bike shops.

  4. If you bike about 2 or 3 times a week (or less), Donkey Republic is a great option. Their basic subscription is 40 Dkk per month, then 15 DKK for any day you use a bike.

  5. I kept seeing a lot of those blue tire bikes in Paris and got quite surprised to see those in Copenhagen too. Now thanx to you I know those were subscription bikes!
Based on your spreadsheet, I'm definitely better off with my 7 years old, self maintened, singlespeed bike. 🚀
