So I was told at my LBS that these marks were an indicator of the tires needing to be replaced (the diagonal slashes). Is that true? It's my rear wheel only. I figured it was just the tire wrinkling in turns? Which I would think would be a normal thing a tire does?
Tire is a maxxis rekon, no exo or anything. It's more of a XC tire that just came on the bike, im looking at changing over to a maxxis assegai in front and an Aggressor in the rear. Should I opt for more sidewall protection like the exo or exo+? Other tire recommendations?

Looks like the tire was maybe under inflated and rode on? Maybe it’s damage
Lmao. No.
Comment back and I’ll show you way worse in the am on my race tires.
It does mean you run them low but unless it’s really wearing it’s a non issue
Diagonals like this have showed up in every quality wide, soft, knobby tire I’ve ridden in 30-something years. (And for 10 years before that, the trend was skinwall rather than blackwall — so they might have been harder to notice.) The only time they _don’t_ show up is with heavy, stiff, cheap tires that don’t have great surface feel.
In my experience, these are never harbingers of doom. Instead, watch for severed strands on the sidewalls, like from an actual cut. Also flaking with age, which exposes the bare strands.
Not at all.
