I've had issues with chain skipping for a while now, but looking down on my cassette while cycling, I couldn't identify there being any chain skipping when it does skip. Looking at it today, it seems to be an issue at the rear derailleur where the chain stiffens and protrudes until it resumes motion.

Is it a chain issue or a derailleur issue? I know it is filthy by the way. It is an issue that started since I installed a new freewheel (I have a fairly old school bike with downtube shifters as well).

Why does it do this?

  1. That jockey wheel is cooked. Whether that’s the cause idk but I’d start by replacing that thing

  2. Your chain is trash and needs to be replaced as do now your jockey wheels which were probably ruined by your chain. I’m guessing you have done zero maintenance to the bike.

If you are not into maintenance ,then take it to a shop

    New bike day !!!

On serious note that chain needs renewing which if also renew the sprockets at same time and give the derailleur a seriously good clean strip the jockey wheels down and clean the etc

It’s because you need new jockey wheels, chain, cassette and probably chain rings. They look like they’ve never been maintained

    As my recommendation
    Change the both pulley
    And chain may helps
    Its more likely 30$

Drivetrain is in lack of maintenance self destruct mode. It needs a complete, well, everything.

I’d say the jockey wheel is fine, it’s likely an older model that didn’t have big teeth to begin with. You should however thoroughly clean your drivetrain and chain. Maybe get a new chain even. Do some research on chain wear and when to replace it. Looks like your previous lubricant has attracted a lot of dirt, so maybe change the maintenance routine before getting a new jockey wheel. Hope it works out

This is absolutely prime r/BicyclingCirclejerk territory. Those jockey wheels are horrific.

  9. If your jockey wheel is in that condition then it is guaranteed that chain needed replacement in 1993.

You can get a new chain and jockey wheel but you’ll be back asking why it’s skipping.

  10. New chain, new freewheel, new chainrings, new jockey wheels. A used bike would be cheaper than doing all the repairs at a shop

Clean this bike properly, the belt is blocking because of dirt and you have to change the gears that are already worn out.

  12. This is why we keep our bikes clean..not to wag my finger here but, this could have been avoided with even an occasional cleaning/the most basic of maintenance.

You could try cleaning it and such now but uh..yeah, this is a new jockey wheel and chain for me..if not a whole new rear derailleur..call me wasteful lol. I’d be sus of the cassette too. Can’t imagine this being the only thing that needs attention either. Hit up a local bike co-op if you have one nearby..or mom n pop shop, see if you can find parts on the cheap…if this isn’t your thing or you don’t work on bikes, pay the extra money and take it to a shop.

  13. Have you tried kicking it Op? Just boot it a few times homie, you’ll get another 20,000 kms before she needs another booting. Take it somewhere remote with no chance of rescue service and she’ll get you home , what else would you do right?
