That’s to stop the chain shifting off the top of the biggest cog on the cassette if the derailleur isn’t set up properly.

No serious rider leaves them in place.

  2. It’s insurance against an incorrectly adjusted low limit screw on the derailleur. If your derailleur setup is good (so it’s not possible to shift into the spokes), ditch the disk!

  3. If you do cut it off as advised here, make sure that when you are in your easiest gear make sure that you do not throw your chain into your spokes as that makes it impossible

As everyone has said it’s not necessary with a well tuned derailleur. If you don’t have a well tuned derailleur you can really damage your spokes

  5. I would actually say OP should get the tool to remove the cassette and learn what it is and how to remove it correctly… cutting it off without cassette removal risks damaging the other components… will also teach how to remove rear wheel and that’s important in flat repair

Rides 75km. Not familiar with dork disc. Reddit needs more of you. Well done.

  7. To some degree they stop the chain from getting tangled in the wheel if the derailleur is set up wrong (or gets damaged). They serve a purpose, but as you now know they are fragile and can come loose and break, and end up littering the countryside. No one ever replaces them. You don’t need one so long as the bike is aligned correctly (see any online tutorial or bike mechanic), which it should be.

Technically you don’t need it. I always cut them off my bikes. That being said, the reason it’s there is to protect your chain and spokes from damage. Just make sure that your limit screws are set properly. The chain does have the potential to jump the top gear and fall into the spokes if your limit screw is not tightened in and you over shift past your biggest cog in the rear.

Why did this require a video presentation when a simple picture would more than suffice?

  10. You’re supposed to cut the dork disc off when you get the bike anyway, but now the bike has done some of the work for you!

  11. Pie plate. As long as the limits are set correctly, hanger and rear der are straight, you dont need it.

  12. You broke the plastic pins keeping that useless plastic disc there. Just cut it out and move on.
