I need a bike for quick school commuting in a metropolitan area (~1.5mi each way, but don’t know which is the better deal. Miyata is $500 (would try to negotiate down), Kestrel is $320. Would greatly appreciate some thoughts.
They are not the same size. The first is for someone well above 6′. I’m not sure that the seller measured correctly for the bike. The Kestrel is significantly smaller. Guessing 56 or 58cm.
I don’t think the Kestrel would make a good commuter. I’m not sure how much talking down will do with the Miyata, it has a lot of excellent parts that are sought after.

If you are 6’3″ or taller the Miyata – I am 6’1″ and would struggle to ride it.
Kestrel “upon proper re-assembly by a qualified mechanic, the bike bike should be ready to ride” so it needs work, so unless you have a couple of hundred dollars to throw at it, I would avoid.
If you have a bike co-op in your city, go see them.
Failing that, go down to Walmart and buy a new Ozark Trail G1 gravel bike for less than the Kestrel, watch a couple of youtube videos to make sure it is set up properly and ride that.
