Got this 790 off FB marketplace from a guy who had intended to make it his own project but was too small (17inch frame). It's got plenty of rust pivots and scratches down to the steel.

Upgraded basically everything. Microshift 9spd cassette, derailer/shifter. Had already been cobbled together as a 1x by someone at some point. Changed the wheelset to some cheap(er) AlexRims with WTB 36mm gravel tires. WTB seat. Then ended with some Richey handlebars and a basket.

Wanting it to be the "everything beater" but worried that might cause the surface rust to actually become bad rust. Maybe sandblasting and painting next year?

I was looking for one of these for years when a 7900 (same thing in carbon fiber-bonded aluminum) popped up for $100. A week later, this exact 790 in my size showed up on Craigslist and I had to pass because I was currently overflowing my bike hooks and owning the *”downgraded”* version of the same bike I just bought is silly.

Anyway, I built mine up and I love it – it has been my main bike all summer. Congrats! The build looks great.
