This is what life looks like on day after day of bike touring across Europe. I wake up in the tent, roll up the sleeping mat, take everything down, and start the big Tetris puzzle of loading the bike. It’s the same every morning — tent poles, bags, food, clothes, all finding their place — but it’s the rhythm that keeps this trip moving forward.

Once the bike is packed, I throw on the cycling kit and hit the road. There’s no coffee machine, no comfy bed, no hotel breakfast — just the quiet of the morning, the sound of zips and buckles, and the anticipation of where the next ride will take me. This trip is about more than getting to Italy for my friend’s wedding; it’s about living simply, moving slowly, and embracing the tent life that comes with bike touring.

People often imagine long-distance cycling as endless adventure, but the truth is it’s built on routine. Every morning starts the same, and it’s not always glamorous. But it’s exactly that structure — the packing, the pedalling, the camping — that makes the highlights feel earned. Whether it’s rolling into a beautiful city like Bruges or finding the perfect wild camping spot by a canal, the reward comes after the grind.

Travelling this way has also made me realise how much you don’t need. With just a bike, a tent, and a few bags, I have everything to get me across borders and into new countries. Minimalist travel strips away the excess and leaves you with the basics: food, shelter, movement, and the open road.

Every kilometre brings me closer to Italy, but it also keeps reminding me why I chose to do this trip the long way. It’s not about speed — it’s about the process, the small victories, and the freedom of knowing each morning brings a new road to ride.

Thanks for following along — would you ever trade your normal morning routine for tent life and a bike tour across Europe?
