These are my front brake pads. They are approximately 1 year old. At some point the front brake suddenly made a terrible scratching noise and this is what I found. Both pistons seem to move freely at the same rate. Do you have any idea what else can cause this wear pattern? Can the brake compound somehow shear off?

It can shear off as its just bonded on. Very rare though.

Yes, in my experience. The glue bonding old Avid BB5 pads seemed to melt if they overheated.
