So yeah there is one bike lane on this road a sidewalk and the road.
For context this is a college town and all along this road is apartments for the students.

As such a student only on a bike for commuting how would I go as to going back to my apartment

Would I just use the road since the yellow lines are dashed instead of solid?
I only ask for clarification since that road just feels unsafe for me to be going back to my apartment to me at least.

  1. Is this in a country that drives on the left side of the road? Is there a reason you wouldn’t use the bike lane for a bike? The fact that the line is yellow at all suggests this is a two lane rode going in opposing directions. Dashed just means you can cross it to pass.

Personally, if it’s clear, I would use the bike lane. If the bike lane is obstructed or drivers frequently close pass you, take the center of the lane and learn to become immune to honks and mean remarks. Only use the sidewalk as a last resort and at walking speeds. People pulling in and out of driveways are not looking for cyclists moving faster than pedestrians.

In all cases I recommend using bright lights even in the daytime. You want to be eye catching from more than a cell phone glance away. I really like my Cygolite HotShot tail light. It’s super bright and not very expensive.
