I bought a cheap EVOSID 160mm crankset from AliExpress, which is a clone of the Alugear Stellar. I wanted to test at low cost how it feels to ride with relatively short cranks. Unfortunately, on one of the very first rides, after a relatively small flat drop (2-3m, 6.5-9.8 foot), both crank arms bent significantly. Just a heads-up if anyone is planning to use this crankset for anything more than casual city riding.

Thanks for putting this out there even though some people will definitely clown on you
Genuinely interested in what type of lifespan/integrity you were expecting out of these cranks?
Don’t think those are engineered to withstand anything higher than curb height drops lol
Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, don’t buy load bearing items from aliexpress and then thrash on them…
I feel like a fair test is “if this part failed on landing, would my face smash into the ground”.
Aliexpress cassette? Fine. Grips? Ok. Dropper post? I’ll allow it. Cranks? No. Fork? No.
Sure there are some reputable sellers out there, but not worth the risk imho.
shocked, i am shocked
Flabbergasted
Hey you took a chance, no shame in that. But most importantly you didn’t get hurt. Thanks for letting other folks know.
bro, I just put Evosid’s 5dev ripoff on my hardtail
I’m still gonna catch one more bike park day next month, so hopefully I won’t have no updates for everyone here
Thank you for sharing this.
I had been toying with the idea of spending the 50€ these cost for a couple of months now, just for shits and giggles, but now I’m happy I didn’t.
I appreciate your testing, so others wouldn’t have to!
Man what else do you expect
Problem with Ali Express is not that Chinese goods are low quality. YSK that for example IPhones are made in China.
Actual problem is that if you buy from a brand that you have never heard of, then they have not earned a reputation for quality, and have no reason to spend extra on making reliable high quality products.
The cheap man pays twice.
I’ve installed and had my hands on several sets of these, they are fine and cool for casual riding.
You are a madman for riding them at the bike park, but I would actually argue that this is a good indicator of their safety that they bent significantly rather than broke when overloaded. Finding out they aren’t up to the task is a different ballgame than waking up in the hospital because they snapped off!
“You will like it” 😈
What did you expect?
yeah, im not a hard core rider, i’ve had several cheap cranks from aliexpress but never damaged anything except an absolute junk pair of pedals. for higher performance demands, i’d rely on brand name stuff…
What I would give for a “the actual good Chinese clone” aggregator lol, I know with enough digging almost anything top flight can bought for a substantial discount.
I would never buy cranks from AliExpress. Shimano are already cheap, light, and rock solid. Why risk it for no reason?
Knock off profiles to me would be the most sturdy.
Buy shit, be surprise by shit? 🤷🏻♂️
Cheap shit behaving like cheap shit. Clones are identical except without the brand. This is not a clone.
You’re lucky you’re not in the hospital.
Why would you expect anything else? Buy from a real retailer/name brand.
Today I learned there’s people who trust their life to aliexpress parts. I would never even consider an off-brand for anything on a bike. It’s too crucial to remain living and the prices of name brand stuff on sale is dirt cheap already.
I’m not sure a 10ft drop to flat is considered “relatively small”. I checked your other posts after some comment mentioned it and it looks like you’re destroying parts left and right, high end stuff too. I wouldn’t expect a budget Ali-express crankset to compare to a Shimano Saint, but you seem to be hard on parts either way.
