I usually go tirestraight to frame and then loosen the side bolts on the stem and the twist the bars until the gap is straight with the center of the frame.

Don’t look at wheel, go off the space on each side between the bars and forks. I’m a lunatic about shit like this. I’ll spend an hour going back and forth

Look over the cross-bar at the axle.

I stand in front of the bike with the wheel between my knees and close one eye to align and then tighten.
It’s never perfect, but seems to work better that way.

take a yard stick and line it up on the bars all the way to the side of the tires
