Picked up this 90s Kona Lava Dome the other day and have been hoofing it around town/trails/towpaths ever since – having a blast! I’ll be using it for commuting, touring, and grocery getting too, so curious as to which fenders / rear rack folks think would look cool / be functional.

  2. I have a similar-vintage Kilauea, looking for a front rack – which one did you go for? It attaches to the canti bosses?

Velo Orange mudguards would look great on this – Brooks Cambium saddle, rear rack wise Nitto

Are you looking for a stable minimal rack? I would put the following as they both can handle up to 20 pounds and have a minimal footprint, yet looks aesthetically pleasing to complement the bike:

SimWorks Burrito – polished or black / $200
Mica Rat Tail Rack – black / $180

I have the Mica on order and putting it on my commuter

    What size is your frame?

I love some flashy silver fenders generally, but in my opinion some clean black fenders would look nice and stealthy here. SKS bluenels are affordable and minimalistic as well as quite simple to setup and adjust. I’ve put them on all almost my bikes. Or you could class it with velo orange or Honjo if you got the cash and the patience to fit them.

Regarding racks, since youre in the UK check out Freshtripe – they got some great quality Nitto, SimWorks and Velo Orange stuff

I’ve had very good experience with the various Tubus racks. I prefer the Vega for all but heavy loads. If you’re also running fenders and have only one set of rear eyelets, the Vega Classic has the advantage of a hole in the stay base which makes mounting the fenders much easier (rack attaches to eyelets, fender stays attach to rack).
