Need help guys

Picked up a bike for free so I can park it around town and not care if it gets stolen or not, but I can't take it around town.

Put any moderate amount of pressure on the pedals the chain skips on the derailer with most of the time, a loud bang and then reseats itself. I'm not sure where it jumps off at on the derailer but the bike stays in the correct gear and shifts somewhat smoothly so the casste and chin seem to be fine.im not trying to spend any money as I'm banking on it being stolen but I would like some use before that happens.

Any help welcome.

  1. Hard to tell but the derailleur might be bent/not aligned with the cassette? I’ve had the same thing happen, it was slipping between two gears as the derailleur was sitting in between gears. Does it do this in all gears?

If adjusting the derailleur doesn’t fix it and you really don’t want to spend anything (new chain, cassette, or front chainring could be the issue) you could just remove the derailleur, shorten the chain and run it as a single speed.

    I would try the following:

    1) Index the gears with cable tension
    2) Check that the chain and cassette/chainring are not worn out
    3) Adjust the b-limit screw
    4) Check if the derailleur hanger is bent

    (2) requires a $10 tool
    (4) requires a $20ish tool

You can look up each of these service items on youtube to get a better idea of how to do them. I think your bike’s symptoms could be from any of these.

  3. You can’t usually tell by looking – but that cassette is definitely well worn – so the chain will be too. That’s almost always the cause of slipping. You’ll need to change them both – and if they’re really bad the front rings too.

    Thankfully 8 speed is cheap.
