cycling is great for you and everyone around you really it’s healthy gets you where you want to go quickly and it’s fun or at least more fun than waiting in traffic makes you wonder why do so few people cycle in Dublin maybe it’s the weather yeah Irish weather miserable but look at ALU it’s a town in Finland where people cycled year round through rain sleet and snow so what makes these kids tougher than adults in Dublin what’s the real reason Irish people can’t cycle yeah how safe people are and how safe people feel when they’re cycling is the main determinant of whether they cycle no one feels safe on this road and if you feel like you’re taking your life in your hands every time you commute you’re going to find a different way to get to work this brings us on to infrastructure and more specifically bike infrastructure this is stuff like bike Lanes Dutch intersections and roundabouts and completely separated bike routes these pieces of infrastructure make the Netherlands the safest country to cycle in we do have cycle Lanes in Dublin the problem is paint isn’t infrastructure Ireland has deadly roads and deadly intersections you can’t feel safe cycling on a road like this with cars moving past you A good rule of thumb I like to use when looking at a road is would I let my granny cycle here the answer to that question for most of Dublin is a resounding no but you Granny would cycle here in fact almost 20 percent of people over 65 cycle in the Netherlands compare that to Irish deaths and you start to see a picture okay okay fine bike good bike lane good Dublin bike lane bad so what well I’ll tell you what it’s getting better kinda thanks to the DCC and the DCC that is the Dublin cycling campaign and the Dublin City Council better bike lanes are being installed here here here here and everywhere granted these flimsy bike poles won’t stop a car from crashing into you but it’s a start the work of everyone involved in these projects can’t be understated they’ve been campaigning for years and have had Fierce competition from people who love polluted cities and sitting in traffic because of nimby’s I.E the not in my backyard Brigade the progress in Dublin has been painfully slow which has led to a lot of projects stopping short of their potential for example this two-way cycle Lane on College Green that leads to a one-way Street the cycling along the Liffey that switches to the other side of the road and so on I’m sure you can think of a cycling in your area that just disappears to make way for cars so what can we do here’s your call to action join the Dublin cycling campaign and volunteer if you can write to your local counselor and send them this video show them that this is important to you share this video Around And subscribe I guess this is more than just cycle Lanes this is about accessibility it’s about safety and it’s about climate change it’s up to us whether we want a city for people or a city for cars thank you

Nice to see someone in Ireland pointing this out. But I think there's more reason than just safety when it comes to choosing not to cycle in Ireland. Because so few people cycle, there aren't that many GOOD bikes available on the used market, meaning if people endeavor to try it out, it involves buying a decent new bike at full price (or some shite from Smyths Toys).
Then there's also the issue of reputation and clout. People in Ireland love their cars. It's a status symbol, and for many is the most valuable thing they own. I moved from Co. Clare to Germany 3 years ago, and when people hear I now ride a bike instead of drive a fancy Audi like I did in Ireland, it's like they are confused and feel sorry for me. People just don't get it, in the mind of the average Irishman bikes are a toy for children and nothing more.
The only way cycling is going to take off in Ireland is if the stigma were to somehow reverse, like maybe bikes became super trendy…
I guess Conor McGregor would have to start riding around on a Grifter or something, then all the 'lads' would follow suit.
I think we have better infrastructure evenin Poland, and we aren't as rich as Irland. Shame on you!
it's nice to see people working to make their city better
Safety is one of the reasons why I rarely cycle now but a huge reason is slow to change traffic lights. Even pedestrians are going mad waiting at lights. If they change every few seconds thats good for cyclists, good for pedestrians and bad for cars. If an elderly person is crossing while the lights change others must wait. Smart lights would also help.
YEAH START REGISTERING TO PAY ROAD TAX,, YOU'LL SOON BE IN A 15 MINUTE CITY DON'T WORRY ,,
Do you guys need any video help for the campaign?
I've tried to swap all my short car rides for bike rides. It's healthier, more fun and it lifts my mood. I can't ever remember actually enjoying driving a car – traffic sucks and they're fairly disconnected from the outside world! With the improvements to bike infrastructure I can even bring my kids with me on routes with protected bike infrastructure which is more fun than having them bored out of their minds in the back of the car.
Turns out a bike is also a better way to commute than using my old motorbike. The motorbike was / is fun but it sucks getting struck in traffic and competing for space.
I suggest any of those complaining about bikes to just give it a try. You might even like it.
Safe place to lock your bicycle, No road taxes, change the stupid law for electric bicycle which says if you use throttle you're classified to MVP there are people like for example me which have bicycle and my bicycle it's limited to 25 km 🤷 not anyone it's able to buy bicycle for €4,000 which have special pedal assists. Hire are people who have problems with legs and also would like to cycling, fix the roads from potholes. Not to 15min City's. And remove the stupid gates from park's which are totaly useless and only annoying anyone. Then people's probably change the habits and start cycling. And also change the speed limit 25km to 30km for electric bicycle but not for electric scooters. Typical kovalski cycling around 35km to 40km faster than the 25km on nonelectric bicycle 🤷
Incredible .. go DCC
For the love of God, just switch to the right lane Ireland. Sweden did it and you can do it too.
Paris has achieved so much in a few years, as have other cities like Valencia while Dublin stumbles along with its cycling infrastructure. It's time to have an evidence led approach to urban design, and to stop pandering to the selfishness and baseless objections of the car-centric mob.
I remember someone telling me, Irish people and cars are like americans and guns. Very very difficult to persuade people to even just use them less! They react highly emotionally – and not logically – to things like cycling infrastructure. So i think trying to reason with someone logically about this is kind of pointless to an extent, so many people simply won't listen. Perhaps its time to think of ways to somehow appeal to people on an emotional level instead.
You forgot the last DCC, dublin commuter coalition! Public transit and cycling infrastructure go lámh in lámh, and that DCC is what showed me Transit, which is my favourite cycling companion app
I’m a full life time cyclist and cycle fast at time in the city and outside in cycling and on main part off the roads with busy streets and I’ve never ever felt uncomfortable or un~safe and I think that’s down to my cycling experience and skills, I’ve never had any issues and only been hit by a car once outside of busy city. I do think Ireland is always lower then other countries and in this case with cycling lanes. But Dublin in my opinion is great for cycling and the lanes are good.
I’ve also made a short cycling film on people whom cycle to work and their own opinions if you like to check that out it’s down my page..
I follow the DCC page too.
Good luck.
The reason more people don't cycle in Dublin is simple. Their not simple.
