I’d never seen these cassettes from Rivendell Bicycle Works until a couple months ago. Huge range, works with any HG hub, easy friction shifting, and light. Roadlink required for a vintage derailleur.
so sick! i have an old MTB witch originally had cassette 7s but with “low range”, def will look into putting one of these on there, do you think they work with standard indexed trigger shifters?

I have used 8sp cassettes with up to 36t for years.
Still indexes w/ 7 speed shifters.

I have a setup with the same deraileur and a 11-40 cassette, 36t chainring. There is not enough chain tension and the chain skips especially on higher gears. Chain keeps falling. Tried to make it work but its a commuter that i need to work well daily. I found such wide gearing not reliable on either Shimano m950 or m952. Not even with road link or longer b-screw. Im switching to m592.

+20% gear steps across the board is a wild thing to be ok with.

Whats the problem with buying a cheap 8speed 11-42 and a 13t last cog? It looks exactly the same as these. I just leave out the last 2 cogs which are loose anyways and swap the last one. Heck i have even seen people just keeping the second last as last chainring.
It is also not complicated to adapt a 7speedhub to accept 8-10speed cassettes just by using spacers on the axle and removing those on the cassette.
I don’t really see a need for new 7speed cassettes in a friction setup.
