Recently picked up a mid 1980s Fuji and have been slowly restoring it, all the components are in a rust removal solution right now and the pieces I’ve taken out look great. I want this bike to be a reliable commuter and fun weekend rider. Also want to experiment with adding a more modern drivetrain down the road.

My question is will I need to replace crankset if I went to something like tiagra 4700? This old sugino set is in good condition but not sure how to determine part compatibility. Derailleurs would be replaced along with back wheel and cassette

Yes, this bike certainly has a BSA/English threaded bottom bracket and would accept easily accept a Shimano 4700 crank and bottom bracket.

Generally, the higher quality bikes from this era will be nearly universally compatible with even contemporary rim brake groupsets. I don’t think Shimano is going to be a 12-speed rim brake groupset any time soon, but there’s nothing which would prevent you from installing a brand new 11 speed Dura Ace group on here.

  2. It´s a 130 mm so minimum is 39 tooth. A large cassette 1x is a sensible choice for the stated purpose.

I loathe the aesthetics of new cranksets on traditional frames, yet thy offer better performance and gear range.
