Can't figure out what's going on here and searching online I haven't found anyone with the same issue.

Basically as I tighten the clamp on bolt for the down tube shifters it causes the shifters to point more and inwards to the point they start rubbing on the frame. I'm not over tightening I don't think, I don't think it would even hold in place with the cable tension. It starts rubbing on the frame well before I think it's tight enough.

I've tried by hand bending the clamp in the opposite direction a little, then reinstalling. It just ends up going back to the same position as I tighten it.

I thought about wedging a little shim/spacer under the band on both side to make the levers point out the opposite way, but I feel surely there must be a better way.

  1. I thought it might also be worth mentioning, these shifters didn’t originally come on the frame. I bought the frame bare and have sourced components of the same era. I suppose it could be an issue with tube width compatibility.

To me it looks like the left lever is on the right and vice versa. You can unscrew them and swap them over see if that helps.
