So since all my other bikes are single speed i decided to convert this one as well, im using a 9speed shimano chain and it seems to be skipping despite everything being new, i cant put a wide single speed chain because it will rub on the tensioner, so do i just try a narrow singe speed chain, feeling pretty lost i consider myself a good mechanic because i work in my LBS, but i just cant figure out why it would be skipping

  1. I guess I had a similar problem when I tried some drivetrain experiments.

What is that Ss cog? I had FireEye SS cogs and it slipped violently under slight load while everything was new. I’ve tried different chains, even machined cogs to reduce their thickness, but eventually I’ve come to the last conclusion – cog’s teeth profile.

Look carefully at yours, if it has a kind of sloped profile, that’s the reason. It would probably work without chaintensioner, but with it the chain has enough slack to slide of teeth. I’ve compared those cogs to mine already in use that don’t have such problems as well as cassette cogs and they all have a slightly vertical part of the tooth profile that engages with the chain.

  2. Flip the tensioner so the chain doesn’t go trough the loop, I have the same style tensioner and that’s what I did to fit a wide chain.
Also remove a link if you can, helps when there’s not enough slack to skip, and the tensioner basically just keeps the chain from flopping.
