Sup fellow SS Riders! I have a simple question for you all!

I made a few mods on my lovely 26" Diamondback which I exclusively use for commuting on the city, where there are slight slopes along the way (~15° slopes from time to time, when not full flat).

Those mods I mention include bigger tires (2.4" wide) and double anti-puncture tape, which made the bike feel heavy as f*ck for the last month.

To sum things up: I'm currently riding a 32:16 (cassette) front:rear ratio with a chain tensioner, where I feel kinda handicapped when it comes to accelerating or riding up slopes with this actual configuration. And the main problem is I can't find any SS 17t-18t dedicated/race cogs anywhere nowadays (where I live).

Bottom line: Would the single cog I scavenged from a 11s sprocket (17t, see picture above) work in this configuration? Or do I SPECIFICALLY need a dedicated SS cog for it?

  1. Its fine. I do it a lot. Gotta get that chain line perfect though. This cog has been designed to make shifting easy. Something you don’t want.

  2. usually works fine but it will be a little more prone to chain drop than a non-ramped singlespeed cog. make sure chain tension and chainline are correct and you probably won’t have any problems.

It may also wear into your free hub body. It is really thin compared to a dedicated SS cog.

  4. I always use sprockets from cassettes. If chain line and tension are good, you shouldn’t have any problems
