Hi everyone,

I’ve been having an issue with my bike since I had the cassette and chain replaced. In the highest gear (smallest cog), the chain makes a distinct clicking/knocking sound whenever I put more torque on the pedals – for example, when accelerating or climbing slightly in that gear.

The sound disappears or gets much quieter if I ease off the pressure, and it doesn’t happen at all in other gears.

Since the replacement, I’ve also:
• Changed the derailleur hanger myself
• Re-adjusted the derailleur indexing
The bike shop that did the original replacement says they don’t see any problem.

Any idea what could be causing this? Could it be an issue with the smallest cog, derailleur alignment under load, or something else entirely?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Have you adjusted your limit stops since replacing the hanger? Is sounds like your chain is rubbing on the next cog, I would try backing off the low limit screw a bit and see if that helps.

Judging by the video it almost looks like the masterlink piece might be stiff or not fitted correctly. It seemed like one of the skips in the video came as that went through the RD and around the cassette. Hard to tell if this is definitely it, but it might at least be worth checking.
