The Wrexham Situation.
The Wrexham Situation.
The Wrexham Situation.
okay it’s time to talk about Retsum now Retsum are a club which appears to divide fans drastically and it all seems to come down to this line of how do you see football and what kind of football fan are you if you’re a traditional fan that sees football in a very I guess English style I guess that you don’t like the idea of foreign owners more overseas especially those from America coming to your country and spending a ton of money then the idea of Rson becoming the club that they have and rising for the leagues you may not like at all but if you’re someone that’s not really involved and you’re not like from a team from League 1 League 2 and National League then you probably just don’t care too much and you may actually find it cool the idea of a new club with people that you may actually know that has players that you may know come through the ranks and get back to backto back promotions now back to backto-back promotions is a very hard thing to do it’s not impossible but what Reximma has done here but even from my perspective what Rexum has achieved here is I don’t know if it’s exactly I don’t know if you could call it a fairy tale story it is to people from Rom if you’re a fan of RSU and you’ve actually gone to the games for Retsum in League 2 or National League in those years when they were just a a normal club if you are a fan you are from Retsum of course it’s a fairy tale story it’s like saying to Manchester City fans before they were bought out by the Abu Dhabi ownership that they won’t be able to enjoy their success because they got published money into it of course not they’re still going to enjoy it and to them winning the treble is still a fairy tale story those that was at main road or was there in division 2 when they were the playoff final back in the late ‘9s those fans it is still a fairy tale and in the videos I did prior when I talked about Rexum it was about the topic of jealousy of the reason why they’re not liked the idea of a football club that shows more of becoming more of a Netflix documentary a Netflix show than an actual football club which I mean it’s part of it and of course it’s big part of it appeal to a much more you know general audience that isn’t that into football clubs at this level League 2 League One National League even some Premier League clubs would kill for this type of fan base so comment down below whether you stand with R simmer success like subscribe and misle designs for the best football prints all made by myself use code viza for 15% off all items but here we are rom are in a championship they’re in the second tier they are one step away from the Premier League and it is not impossible to believe they will be in the Premier League in the next two to three years it’s not impossible to think that if their trajectory and the way they seem to operate seems to indicate things they seem to always get players that’s from the tier above down to their level now the big difference is there’s a big gap between the Premier League and the Championship to the Championship League One League 2 and so on so forth but you know I mean IPS Town did backto back promotions from League One to Championship and up to Premier League but it was a different circumstance and even let’s say Luton Town they came from back-to-back promotions some League Twos to League One to Championship and then it took them only three years in Championship to get into the playoffs the reason why I’m saying this is that it appears to look like they’re already looking at bringing in some players with some Premier League pedigree down to the Championship to play for Retsum next year either on lawn or players that are maybe a bit on age that may join him for a season or two the likes of Jimmy Vardy has been linked immensely to Retsum but let’s be honest the idea of Rexom actually being promoted again is almost a near impossibility when you compare all the other League One teams that’s been promoted in recent years i I can’t see a world where they even in top 12 in the top half never mind in the top in the top six these are the new size did all stay up oxford Portouth and also Derby County but narrowly they were always in the conversation other than maybe Portsmouth the entire time and then of course Para Gal eventually went down in the end and when you look at Retim’s team here nine players in their entire squad has never even played in the Championship before so they’d be looking at lawn signings you know players that Premier League clubs that because of their squad and the talent that they have won’t really get too much game time so coming at Championship getting a decent wage and you know having some good development will be important for them this has happened many times and is a big part of how teams even go up now you got Amano Solomon from the Spurs elite last year jed Ante from Bournemouth to Burnley howard Bennett of course came from City to Burnley and then of course was signed to Southampton as well so that market is going to be key for them and of course players that are near the end of the career as well like Patrick Bamford or Tom Kane and of course Jamie Vardy these players have already been heavily linked but it could be a case of they’re just two obvious like names that would always be linked in the first place and yeah may have some money in comparison to the National League of League 2 however compet Championship it’s a different kettle of fish many clubs championship have far bigger budgets plus also a few clubs have parachute payments their main goal should be survival next year but I do want to ask this question though like if you’re a Rson fan maybe from America like do you just watch them because of a documentary on Disney Plus it can’t be that right or like cuz you like the idea of being part of something i think that’s a big part of it like the idea of being part of something that you think is kind of cool it’s almost like a story that you’ll see from some film or some movie or something right that there’s a there’s like this underdog story that came from nowhere from nothing that could potentially become something big it’s like Rom the way that I see it is almost a sort of like perfect footballing metaphor for like the American dream where like anyone can be anything if given the right resources and and hard work and grit and whatever else i feel like it comes across like that and yes I know I’m going to get comments like the last one saying “Hey but Ryan Reos is actually Canadian so it doesn’t actually make any sense.” Well you know what mate shut up it you get the idea okay please of course if you’re someone from England from the National League whatever yeah I do believe there was a good portion of jealousy there you know and or league 2 club or league one club where a lot of media a lot of attention has gone to RSUM because they’ve got of course just a massive audience in America overseas and even in parts of the country as well in the UK so I can see why there’s also some jealousy there where for example you will see many articles about Rson being promoted into the championship even so about Birmingham but you won’t see many really at all about Charlton for example and that kind of was a story of when teams were promoted from League 2 with Retsum and you heard about Retsum in League One but not much more about the other clubs and it makes sense right I’m sure the same thing can be said about me of like well I’m doing another video about Rets I’ve done three videos in two years or however longer spin and like hey well you’ve not done a video about you know Cwley or Swindon or Morham or Crew like I’m part of the problem but am I going to get views for doing stuff about Morham or Crew or Aquiton Stanley you know like in the same way of why I do about RTS because I think it’s more interesting it’s the same reason why all these media companies also do posts and articles about RSim because more people find it interesting it is an interesting story I mean my opinion of RSim always stayed the same with that with um owners at clubs that we all point at and say “How has this ever been allowed to happen?” You look at with Reading with of course now Die has now finally left the club with Sheffield Wednesday with Scum Forb with South End with multiple clubs that’s gone under and have had awful ownership and awfully run clubs we always say about how awful it is and how it’s ever happened but now we got a club here with owners that is putting their money in their pocket is involved in the community is actually boosting the football club and is doing everything positive possible I could possibly find that could be benefit a football club and it’s now a bad thing you know like we can’t have it both ways we can’t have it where clubs we look at and say “Oh how has this been ever have this ever happened that these owners are you know they don’t know what they’re doing and they don’t care about the club they don’t care about the people they don’t put their money in the club.” And then when someone does the absolute opposite of that and they do everything they can to help the club it’s now a bad thing but why because they got a show on Disney Plus or is it because of the idea of them buying the league having an unfair advantage because clubs in that tier typically don’t have the money or the finances to do so or the resources or the links things will change of course Paul Mullen for Samp has been a massive part of their club for the last 3 four years now and this year that just happened he’s only scored three goals in 26 games so eventually these players that they’ve got which of course were two good less below they are upgrading year by year so many players they have will have to leave and if that’s possible in order to find out do you imagine that their clauses will go up that they will have some higher wages by being in a higher league so we’re going to see how easy it is to actually get players out and then go bring players in so all in all how I feel about it is that no matter kind of where you stand with it it’s still kind of cool to see and it is an achievement no matter how you stretch it no matter how much money you think they spent or how unfair it is to get back to back to back promotions it’s still impressive i’m interested to see how they do next year if you’re asking me I think they’ll stay up somewhat comfortably similar to how I think Portsmouth did it last year i think they’ll be staying around the kind of 15th to 17th area 14th to 17th that’s the kind of zone I’ll be putting them in for next year i think they could stay up i think they could i don’t think there’s a reason why they can’t so yeah keep it up boys see you next time

I live in the USA and have been a big sports fan all my life, just like my father. We watched baseball on TV together and went to games a few times a year. I also loved soccer becaue i played it as a kid. So, when Welcome to Wrexham came out I got interested in the team and am a die hard fan. I follow F1 racing but no one questions me about that.
back-to-back-to-back isnt impossible, but wrexham is the first club to do it (in the top flights of the football league) in successive seasons!!!
As an American fan, my journey to following Wrexham was via my interest in the Welsh independence movement / Annibyniaeth i Gymru (I follow secessionist movements around the world). I was watching a documentary on it and part of that independence narrative was what was happening in Wrexham with the pending sale to Reynolds/McElhenney (I think it was specifically about the exposure the Welsh language will enjoy once the doc airs). I don’t give a shit about Rob and Ryan (not adversarial here, I didn’t have an opinion of them). I was already predisposed to soccer since I follow my local team here, so it was natural progression to become interested in what Wrexham was doing. And learn a lot more about soccer than I did before.
As an American, I just like ryan reynolds, therefore i like wrexham.
As a American I got into Soccer/Football after the last World Cup, I watched the US struggle and said "We are the greatest country when it comes to resources like money and athletes why aren't we any better at this?" and it simply cause people dont watch or understand the beauty behind the game, we dont have a National league I'm sure we do but not like the England of course. So I got into FIFA and around that same time I think season 1 of Welcome to Wrexham came out not sure tbh so I got into that, I have watched a few game on tv but I am not claiming to be a fan, I am a fan of the story though. I fell for the game of Football hard its really beautiful, I even have decided to route for Carlisle United who got relegated so fun there, my point of this is I think the show has opened the peoples eyes here in the US that the game of Soccer/Football is truly great and we need that culture here. I think its called the USL a league here in the states that has a League 1 and 2 and a Championship similar to the EFL, they just added promotion and relegation to those leagues, and they are trying to get a League like the Premier League to be the top of the top, so its coming slowly but coming.
What Wrexham have done is not hard to do when all they've done is throw money at the league, they'll be lucky to survive next season
Americans like Cinderella stories in sports.
Search NCAA Cinderella teams.
Wrexham have invited us to join their Cinderella story.
American here. The whole documentary series is part of the reason I support them, but I also started with Sunderland Till I Die. I got really heavy into football because of that, latched onto Aston Villa and the timeline Rob/Ryan buying Wrexham perfectly matched up with me going deeper and deeper into the leagues so it was natural. I also latch onto odd teams like Harrogate for no reason, so I can see their side of it. Good opportunity + good timing + good investment really was the catalyst.
Its entertainment, what are you on about
I follow them, because I have been following Rob M for 15+ years.
i wouldnt consider myself a wrexham fan per se, but as an american who is a HUGE fan of welsh football i LOVE wrexham, i love seeing the community around the club, the true welsh identity of the club take center stage. in a league system completely dominated by english geezers who are stuck in their footballing ways (except if its your club, and except if theyre english, and except if its "proper football", huge double standard there) its a really refreshing shout. ryan reynolds and rob mcelhenney are better, more involved, and more personable owners than daniel levy, FSG, qatari sports investment, saudi investment funds, stan cronkey or whoever the fuck owns arsenal, and other premier league owners, but its never brought up because they have the cover of "traditional" football heritage, its maddening.
Watch out for the sale
Even if the owners have a lot of money: that's true for maaaany football clubs, and they're not even in the BIG money league of football. I say it's fair game because at the same time they're very limited to their investments and they're managing it just right with the perfect people. Influence will get you that, of course, but you are a Hollywood actor convincing some Premier league executives to work for you and that's not easy at all, given how everything in football can go wrong at a moment's notice. Anyway, let's go Wrexham.
The only reason you need to explain the US fans is that they are looking for clubs to support. Football fandom in the US is growing rapidly but the quality and visibility of the MLS is too low to capture all of it. So they look elsewhere. And since it isn't very compelling to shop around and find a club arbitrarily not knowing the fan culture or having any connection to it, Rob and Ryan's genius is that they are DELIBERATELY telling stories in order to build that familiarity and fan investment.
I have never had much interest in football, and these days I'm just open about it. If I gonna root for somebody it's MK – Mandalskameratene Norway. Because that's were I am from. But, I find the Wrexham documentary quite intriguing and inspiring. Because it's not just about winning, it's about the community and how much football can help a town.
As for the winning: This I know about football – "Through money on it" is not a recipes for success. Heck, having top players ain't a recipe for success. Moral seems to be one of the most important thing football, and we can grinch on Americans "Fake it to you make it" happy attitude, but done right it's contagies in a good way.
Ryan is gay. He wants to be in the shower room. Every new person he hires is admitting they are gay. The ENTIRE Wrexham fan base are ALL gay. That's the entire POINT of this team. A gay owner hiring gay players for gay fans. Easy to understand.
If you don't like foreign owners from overseas? That is basically your whole league system!
I (from a german perspective) dont like the concept of Wrexham but I understand that british football fans see them as owners that care more than the usual business man. Still, I will never be a fan of football club owners, for me a club should be owned by the members
No one in league one last season liked Birmingham or Wrexham
They hate rob and ryan just for envy. Im a brazilian and became a fan of wrexham because the tv show. Been following the history of the club since 2022. Let's hope for a new fantastic season in championship.
